It can do any of those tones depending on the guitar and or speakers used.
Lately I've been staying out of these types of discussions..BUT To avoid any confusion out there.. I find this extremely hard to believe..
Tag you and I have totally different ears and opinions about tone and comparisons and we've been down this road before and I wish not to go there again so here I will inject my opinion and if you disagree then so be it..
I will say I've built just about every Dumble style amp in my time done the work and all the layouts and listened to just about every Dumble clip posted here (at least 5 years) including many clones and there is no way your TKT amps including the origional 183 and get it to sound like a 2nd or 3rd generation Dumble amp.. Especially earlier 2nd generation amps.. Simply no way.. Different topology..I throw this strongly voiced opinion out there and run over it if you want.. I had to say it for others out there..
Enjoy the amp as it sounds wonderful as is your playing as well
All The Best..

Hey Tony. You are taking me the wrong way. NO amp, not even a Dumble can do everything. I just played a few of those old Dumbles, and what I CAN say is this. Those things sound seriously outdated and raw when compared to 183 or other good newer Dumbles. If both amps were in a studio, I can just about guarantee that after a years time, the old one is going to get very, very little (ANY???) play time. The new ones can be dialed in to sound very similar, but they are always going to sound better. YES better. Sure, an ocassional song or part may need that older, scratchier sound, but you can get a new one pretty close, and its still going to sound clearer and just more hi fidelity. Are you in my area? Come on over and we can play them. You are always welcome. Not sure why I come off as an ass on here, but if we got togther, I bet you and I think and hear things extremely alike, and whether we like the same tones or not does not matter. I bet we would have a blast too! I am dead serious. If you are or are everyin the NJ/NY area, just shoot me an email and you are more than welcome to stop by.
Structo wrote:Funny thing is that when he owned #183 nothing could touch it.
Now, not only one but two new amps he owns can hang with it.
Me thinks somebody is exaggerating a wee bit.....
Doesnt it make sense that an exact clone of an amp if done correctly would hang with the original?? LOL! And believe me, Shad did it RIGHT. I am also not sure that 6L6s with the 183 preamp does not IMPROVE certain things about the amp, although it does take other things away as well. At this point, it really is personal taste. You are also nmore than welcome to stop by and plug into both. I also have a TwoRock artist that you will LOVE as well.

Thanks so much for the invite and yes I need to make a road trip and visit some fellow tone Bros.. Scott and Jelle so I will gladly add you to the list..As much as we love tone I am sure we will have a BLAST..
I will bring my 2nd generation build and maybe perhaps your opinion of that generation amp sounding grainy and harsh might just change...

I see.

So could you perhaps try to explain what exactly you mean if you write that you think that your TKT 183 6L6 does "sound as good as" the Texas Flood Dumbleland ... ?

Hi Mr Dumble,
Let's check if I do understand it right that your opinion is this:
If you could travel back in time with your TKT #183 6L6 to the day the Texas Flood recordings started in Jackson Browne's studio and your TKT 183 6L6 would have been used for recording the "Texas Flood" track instead of Jackson Browne's Dumbleland, then in your opinion the guitar tone of the guitar solo on the "Texas Flood" track from 2:40 to 4:20 would sound
- "very simililar" to the one recorded with the Dumbleland - at least if SRV would have spent enough time to dial in a "very similar" tone with your TKT 183 6L6 and would have used "the guitar and or speakers" that are suited best to get a "very similar" sound in combination with your TKT 183 6L6,
and
- even "better" than the one recorded with the Dumbleland - "better" meant by you in the sense of "clearer and just more hi fidelity".

Hey Max,
That was not an ODS of which I speak. From conflicting reports, I believe that tone was mixed with fender amps as well. I dont think anyone knows for sure. In any case, an ODS can get very similar tones, yes.

Hi Mr Dumble,
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
So let's check if I do understand it right now that your opinion is this:
If you could travel back in time with your TKT #183 6L6 to the day the "Running On Empty" (1st song of Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty" record) slide guitar track was recorded with David Lindley using one of his 1st generation ODS amps and your TKT 183 6L6 would have been used by David Lindley for recording the "Running On Empty" slide guitar track instead of one of his two 1st generation ODS amps, then in your opinion the guitar tone of the slide guitar solos on this track would sound
- "very simililar" to those recorded with the 1st generation ODS - at least if David Lindley would have spent enough time to dial in a "very similar" tone with your TKT 183 6L6 and would have used "the guitar and or speakers" that are suited best to get a "very similar" sound in combination with your TKT 183 6L6,
and
- even "better" than the one recorded with the 1st generation ODS - "better" meant by you in the sense of "clearer and just more hi fidelity".

Slide is a bit harder for me to tell, because I dont like (most of it at least) or play it. That being said, being lucky enough to have played many earlier Dumble amps and many newer ones, I can say Dumble amps became much better sounding. (yes the word you hate, better!), and I believe if Lindley would have had access to both, he would have chosen the newer amp to use at that time. Dumble himself said its always a work in progress, and I think he got much better. The later amps fetch much more money AFAIK, and I think its basically because the tones of the amps got much better.
335 into Quinn, T-Rex roomate in loop (No Dumblator) 2/12 twoRock cab with G65 speakers. SM57 Boss BR900 recorder.
I like this tone as well.
Mr. D,
IMO that sounds pretty bad, I think it's the recording. It does not show the TKT in a good light. Sorry that's how I hear it.
No problems Rod! I dig it, that does not mean you have to. I had the Volume knob on the 335 down to about 7, so that changes things quite a bit. Here is another clip comparing the 6L6 to the EL34. This is the 335 again, but both amps into the 4/12 mesa with the G12H30s. I made the mistake of dialing in both amps to sound as similar as possible, but I still think you can hear the differences. The first is the 6L6, then there is a long break, and I pick up with the EL34 amp. You can hear the kind of "hollow" lower notes on the EL34, and the additional "hair" on the notes I think. Personally, I love both tones! http://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 15130&q=hi
VERY GOOD!
I really dig the extra top end of the G12H30s, as long as they are tempered by the 4/12 mesa enclosure.
