Sorry for the delay in responding(I have the weirdest work schedule - 7 days on and 7 days off - 26 weeks off a year). There is nothing outside the norm electronically about the PAB in that amp. I will admit that, when I engage PAB on the clean tones, my picking technique relaxes exponentially. I do not push the input with heavy touch because the boost is always too "hot" for me and can get brittle sounding on top. Not so critical on the OD with PAB on - it seems more forgiving to me. I experimented in the past with larger resistors there, but always come back to the 22M value. I just back WAY OFF with my right hand - perhaps that contributes to the clear sound. I dunno....phalanges wrote:stelligan wrote:
Both clips were: Clean tone, add PAB, add OD(OD + PAB)
Your PAB sound is full and clear.
I get a mid hump in PAB and lose lows, which is good for OD boost but less
satisfying for cleans.
Did you do anything different?

Crystal latice or vacuum, that is the question.
Re: speakers opinions
Anybody using a Wizard speaker with a D-style amp? I'm currently using a Swamp Thang with my Overtone and fairly pleased, but wish I had slightly more sparkle. Its really smooth and thick.

Re: speakers opinions
FWIW - I finally got my trial version of the Jensen Jet Blackbird. I've been using an Em. Delta Pro 12A, which I've gotten real used to for overdrive. I mainly use the amp in OD but with the drive backed down so I can get a clean jazzy tone with some bite, then when I dig in have it overdrive nicely.
So my first impression of the Blackbird was yuck - it seemed thin and crispy sounding. However, after a couple days of playing it I'm really liking it. It seems less dark than the Delta Pro, less bassy and has a real sweetness for overdriven single notes. I find it has more definition than the delta pro.
Does that sound like a wine tasting commentary?
Sorry. I think the bottom line is this. You install a speaker, get used to it, dial it in to where you like it, then install another one and eventually dial it in to where you like that one, too. I'm using a combo so I can't quickly A/B the speakers because it takes about 10 minutes to swap them, and by then I've forgotten the last one! Unfortunately I don't have descent enough recording equipment to record them and listen to the differences.
Anyhow, I have the Blackbird on loan from CE Dist for 1 month and am really growing to like it. My guess is when I put the delta pro back in I'll say "yuck, this thing is too bassy", then after a week I'll think it's great again.
Mark.
PS - I've been a Strat guy for the past 12 years, but recently bought a Les Paul and find that I'm often trying to dial in a Strat-neck-pickup-like tone on the neck pickup with the LP. Believe it or not, I can get more of a sweet Strat/blues tone from the LP with the Jensen than I can with the Delta Pro. YMMV

Yeah, I think they call it psychoacoustics.
Where your brain and ears compensate for differences in tone and volume.
Ideally you would have two identical cabs with different speakers in them and the ability to switch back and forth to hear the differences.

Re: speakers opinions
I just put two Delta Pros into my Twin and they really sound good. They seem to tame the brightness of the Fender amps a bit. For my style (straight up Texas Blues) I couldn't ask for a better combo of the Twin and the Delta Pros.
Re: speakers opinions
Just reporting I tried a Wizard in a 1 X 12 sealed cab with my Overtone and the results are just magical! I'll probably try some of the other recommended speakers at some point in the future to compare, but I can't imagine they could sound any better. I'll post on the TW side about the results with that type amp - short version is I won't be using the Wizard with that amp much. I would really recommend trying out this speaker with your Dumble style amps if possible. The cab makes a difference, and I probably wouldn't try one in an open back or large port cab however.
