I have to agree with Tag on this. There's a diferent quality in the effect that he is talking about compared to the Ojai. Ojai blooms into feedback and the feedback sustains the note one octave higher. The effect Tag talks about is like power supply sag, the flip is caused by the amp demanding more power to sustain the note and when the power supply catches up phases the sound to keep it going. I don't think is in the PI, I think this happens in the preamp. Just my opinion, maybe I'm wrong cause I don't know Dumbles, I spend more time on the trainwreck side. But anyway that is what it sounds like to me.....Mr Dumble wrote:dogears wrote:Yes. Correct. My Bludo Ojai does more of this than any amp I have played. Including 183 or Tag's Quinn.
I wish Mr. Dumble would put a lid on the BS regarding only TR and Shad getting what is easily gotten. This total nonsense.

Where the note blooms into fundamental harmonic.
Remember that Shad said the Ford clone did this in spades.
From my notes:
Sounds like there is a blanket over those speakers compared to the Quinn.Listen to this one. Different speakers monitors make ALL the difference! I dragged up my Yamahas to record this one with. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 52680&q=hi
CLEAR!! Scott. I hear feed back in your clips YES. But I dont even want that. Thats just gain. I aem taking about the phasey thing at the end of the note. I just do not hear it your clips. The one above has much better quality, and I find yours sounds muffled now. Fuzzy behind a blanket tone. More like what I heard in person. The Quinn had the clarity, note bloom and strain. But now we are just arguing again. We both like and are happ with what we have. VERY GOOD!!!

Re: Dumble note flipping caught on sound file!
Here is one for Tag....
Record a clip with nothing in the loop of TKT. Nada. Add some verb in the mix. No effects.
When I played TKT with the cables in the loop it way compressed the highs and caused subtle phase shift. Without the stuff in the loop, it was very very different sounding. Those cables are rolling all the highs and totally compressing the top into what you are calling "flip". Listen to all that verb on what Makris posted. Now do one dry and with nothing plugged in. Gonna be much different me thinks!
Try doing two clips. One with the cables and Trex. But, bypassed. No verb. And then one with nothing plugged in.
Thanks!

Re: Dumble note flipping caught on sound file!
Just to clarify, are you talking about the supply voltage, or the voltages at the V2 plates? If you were to measure the preamp supply voltages after you hit a note, you will see them drop by 20-40 volts compared to their idle value.
For me, with the input volume and OD drive maxed, master at zero, if I start bashing chords into humbuckers, I see at most 5V of sag on the B+4 and B+5 nodes.
I do however see 40V of change of "average DC" at the V2 plates.
To see 30V of sag at the B+4 node, I have to crank the power amp well beyond what I personally could tolerate. (I'm glad I wired up a dummy load.)

All the clips sound good in their own right. I will share these links with you guys again:

No other amp I have ever heard sounds like this... no other person I have ever heard play can make any amp sound like that either, IMNSHO. To me, by far, the guy who has been able to milk the magic of the whole Dumble thing more musically than anyone else. Great vibrato lesson for everyone, as a fringe benefit.

Re: Dumble note flipping caught on sound file!
IIRC, and you can do a search on this forum for several threads that discuss this, it isn't as simple as you describe. What I remember was that you aren't actually looking for AC or DC balance. Instead, things like "lightly brush the strings and adjust, then wait a second for the capacitors to catch up and repeat." My problem is that I don't ever manage to find the sweet spot...or else it's all sweet. My ear never hears the magic "Oh, there it is!"bluesfendermanblues wrote:.....I would imagine that putting a sinus 1000hz signal at the input (and a dummy load on the output) and then adjusting for 0 AC difference between the V3 plates at pin1 and pin6, would be a simple approcah, given that max bloom/phasing is happening when the two Pi halves are in total balance???
I'll admit I haven't tinkered much with a different PI tube, though. I settled on an Ei long plate based solely on tone.

There is clipping in that video, but from 45 seconds out the amp sounds unreal if you turn the volume way down. All those huge lower mids are present even on the high notes. Just like my Quinn TKT. Dumble did a great job of cloning Quinns amp! Or wait, maybe it was the other way around.

Re: Dumble note flipping caught on sound file!
I must be deaf or have bad speakers, I don't hear anything in the mr.Dumble clips that sounds Like what is being described. On the other hand I do hear some really cool sounds from Dogears and the Carlton clips.
I am trying to get a handle on the Dumble thing as I would like to build one. Just want to build the best one for me. I think it may be #183. Still not sure what the difference in tone is from say #124. Which one is Larry Carlton using that you tube vid ?
Any opinions will be much appreciated. Sorry if I hijacked this thread.

If you dont hear it on the tail end of the note at 4-5 seconds in the clip in my first post, then lucky you! One of the coolest and most unique features Dumble invented IMO. Dumbles do it to varying degrees, some not at all, and even fewer clones in my experiences. Here is the clip again. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 48756&q=hibillyz wrote:I must be deaf or have bad speakers, I don't hear anything in the mr.Dumble clips that sounds Like what is being described. I am coming to realize how few people even notice this. I mentioned before I was banned from TGP for arguing about its existence!! Now we have guys who know what they are talking about explaining how parts of the circuit can cause and or contribute to that. VERY COOL!
