I'm just a tweaker and maybe one day I can be in the company of many others here. I shouldn't be, but sometimes I'm amazed at the amount of talent found on this forum. It's not just playing a guitar or soldering it's other craftsmanship that's presented here as well.

UltraPhonix, what can I say great about him that already hasn't been said. I don't know whats better, his amp building skills or his photography. He reminds me of some of the famous magazine photographers that shoot automoblies, firearms and guitars.

Thanks Mike, my simple aim is to get people psyched-up and inspired to build something cool. I certainly hope that it doesn’t discourage and demoralize builders because then I would have utterly failed at my attempts to share in the joy this hobby gives me.

Stelligan, don’t get discouraged! Come on in, the water’s fine!

Awesome build Mike! Really dig your component selection. Those Pihers and Mepcos makes me weep! I like the FET Vol on the back as well. Is that a custom "Funk" Heyboer?

Hey Jim,
Just callin' it like I see it. Much respect for all the fine builders here, amateur and pro. I have enjoyed my experiences with building. I am just at the point where most of my parts are used up. It's time for me to concentrate on playing & singing - enjoying the fruits of my labor. I really do dig seeing and hearing all these extremely well built amplifiers! I'm not going anywhere, just gonna be a tad more passive. Solder on, Dudes!!

Prelim Voltages

Post by ToneMerc »

Ok, I finally lit it up. I never fully power up with all NOS tubes so dropped in a set of JJ's in V1&V2 and a NOS Sylvania 12AT7 in V3, with a new quad of Tung Sol 6L6G's (xtra tall) in the grunt section.

Primary: 121.8V
No load B+: 516V
Loaded B+: 492V
Screens: 490V
B+3: 455V
B+4: TBD
B+5: TBD
Bias: -32.5
Heater@V1: 7.02VAC.......aghhh that 122V input

V1: TBD
V2: TBD
V3:301/307V

I'm thinking 2.7K and 24K in the string should get me close with the other two tubes fully lit.

Here's the tube compliment that I will try first.

V1:NOS RFT ECC83
V2:NOS Sylvania 12AX7A
V3:NOS Amperex (Mullard) 12AT7
V4&&V7: NOS quad Sylvania 6L6GC

I became too skeered to try a quad of KT88 in this beast.

I just posted asking if any one had built a #40 with a master and I see you've done it DOH
What are your impressions with say the master full up and volume control as the master vs master as master

Thanks

Bob, I finally got a chance to circle the wagon on this one. I tried the separate masters and rewired it yesterday with the global master and I prefer it better. I'm using a 560K with the 180K to ground and the balance between both modes is great. If I revisit this ever again, I may put the clean master on a relay so it can be disconnected in the OD mode.

Note to self......never again install a super bright pink LED indicator, it's freakin flashlight. I swapped it to a low intensity amber and it's much better now.

Dropping string: 5K>18K>3K

V1-RFT: 188V/189V

V2-Sylvania 12AX7WA LP: 199V/199V

V3-Mullard 12AT7:285V/278V

V4-V7: Tung-Sol 6L6G, will be replaced with NOS Syl 6l6GC
Plates: 491V
Screens: 488V

FET 2N4416A: 22.3V/11V

Funny about the bright LED.

A few years back when I was into building custom PC's I put a super bright blue LED in my PC for the hard drive LED.

It was like having an arc welder in the room when that thing flashed!

You couldn't really even look directly at that thing without hurting your eyes.

Changed that out pronto for a lower intensity one.

Just noticed this, maybe it's the lighting in the pic but the TS slope resistor looks like 100R, not 100K.
I know for SURE that that value WAS used in a particular dumble, reason? It was given to me by a guy on w coast with a DUNBLE ( cloned from real thing) that was INSANELY AWESOME, nothing here at this site has ever touched it, and i can say that emphatically! I`ve heard it! It TOTALLY nailed the RF thing, i mean NAILED it..FAT, NO ugly harmonics period....sounded like a saxaphone w/KAHUNAS! Vocal quality and sustain out the yin yang..

Omegaamps
this message went unnoticed, you say that the slope resistor was 100R?

Hi ToneMerc,

you don´t have to change the 100R tail. The presence mod
recommended to me by HAD himself was adding a 500R pot
in series with the presence cap. A 1 K pot also works great here.
BTW HAD told me to try different values for the cap,
from 470 nF up to 4.7 µF AFAIR.At the time I was surprised by the large range he recommended, my current favourite is 2.2 µF.
The 1 µF is a good value for the Accent switch IMHO,
but the 2.2 µF (or greater) provides more range for a real
presence control.Looking forward to your build

Marcos
Tried implementing this instead of Accent switch, but get no change in sound from pot. I am using a 1K pot and 2uf. Any suggestion as to my problem? Circuit is a 2nd gen using #40 schematic.

FWIW, I did change the GNFB resistor from the 820R to 4.7k. Could this be my problem?
