Chiming, singing, bell-like sound problem

Post by megemen »

Dear All,
Recenyly I have built a D'lite 22/33. But there is a problem with it. When I strum a cord ( say a G major cord ) I hear a chiming, a singing, bell like sound, it is like you tap a wine glass. Especialy with the B and high E string. Is there a way to get rid of it?
regards

you can see some of the pictures at links below :

Kinda sounds like a microphonic tube. Try some tube swapping.

You can identify which tube it is by having the amp on and the volume reasonable and tap lightly on the preamp tubes one by one.
The microphonic tube will ring.

I had a problem like this with my D-Lite build. I put rubber bands around the preamp tubes and the problem was solved. That fixed the "resonate" problem, and I later replaced the RBs with a piece of large OD heat shrink as Mesa Boogie used to do to their tubes.

If you put anything on vacuum tubes make sure it is heat and fire proof.

Silicon o-rings from auto parts store will work as well.

I recently received some from http://www.tubedepot.com/p-tube-damper.html

$.50 each put two around the tubes.

The thing is i have changed the tubes with some others but nothing has changed. So what will those rubber rings will help with? Those rings might help it but does not let the problem dissapear. It will just cover it. it is like a temporary solution. I should get rid of it for good.

All u need is a 1 inch piece of shrink tube--shrink it onto the top half of the preamp tubes-

megemen,

I've just had a look at one of your pictures and by the looks of it, you have your cathode cap on V2b in backwards. That is not going to help anything, if that is what has happened. Also, you have a wire attached to the grounded end of the cap, can you tell us what is going on there?

Is your ringing sound on the clean channel or both?

Cheers,

Paul.

Paul,

I think the OP corrected that problem based on post on Brown note? :)

yes thnx, i have corrected that reverse cap thing before. i have replaced it with a new one, and the wiring is ok.
As for the ringing, it is on both clean and the distortion channels. But i guess if i correct the clean channel then the distortion channel will be fine accordingly.

I will pose a couple of obvious questions:

1. Does this happen independently of what guitar you use?

2. Have you tried plugging into the FX loop return of the amp -- i.e., straight into the phase inverter -- to determine whether the "ringing" still occurs?

That will help you find out where the noise originates.

1. Yes this happens independently of what guitar I use. strat, tele, LP

2. I have plugged straight into IN and also into FX loop. Both had it.

have i been able to answer correctly? ( coz English is not my native language )
