JFet substitution

Post by boldaslove6789 »

I was curious if anyone has tried a 2N4416A JFET in place of the NTE 452 . The data sheet states that they are basically the same thing. Did HAD always use the NTE 452 for his FET circuit?

Here's a link (2n4416a):

And a link to the NTE 452:

In his very early amps he used the 2N3823, which is a very similar spec to the NTE452, but has been obsolete for many years.

HAD's history with obsolescence seems to be he would use his originally spec'd parts as long as he could get them, so perhaps the 2N3823 had AF response characteristics he liked better than the NTE452, ie most likely more even order harmonics. (These transistors were not designed for AF use, but then neither was the 12AX7). OTOH maybe when the NTE452 came out he preferred it, but probably not.

He only switched to EV12L speakers when he could not get Altec 417 Series 2 ceramic magnet speakers, for example, and prior to the Series 2 he used the 417C Alnico magnet.

I bought a batch of surplus 2N4416A JFETS but there were some built in protection diodes that made them somewhere in between problematic and unusable. The key word here is "surplus". My old go to surplus and salvage shops did not survive Covid19, and the subsequent supply chain shortages, and the property rental rate increases that followed. Lots of what you think you are buying at surplus and salvage shops is NOT what it appears to be. A lot of it is factory rejects. Those 2N4416As appeared to have their diodes reversed. Apache was kind enough to allow me to drag $20,000 worth of test equipment in with me. I bought 4uF capacitors that were actually 0.4 uF capacitors. I stocked up on 63VDC and 75VDC 5600uF capacitors for Peavey's solid state 400 series amp filter caps. Brand new, and the work like a champ every time. The 2N4416 is also a good NTE 452 or ECG 452. ECG was Phillips Electronics Group's version of NTE, until NTE bought them out. I have ECG catalogs that are so vintage that they have lovely ads for Sylvania vacuum tubes on the back covers. The SK3116 also subs for an NTE 452. Good luck finding that one!> Same goes for the SK9072. For all intensive purposes the SK9072 is an NTE 452. NTE paid someone else to make EVERYTHING for them. My last NTE purchase was a sub for a GE D42-9 BJT. The GE D44-12 also works. They are NOT the same NTE replacement numbered part, but either one works, for my needs. Parts like 2N5585 or 2N5595 or 2N5485 are not very close and some of them are BJTs so, be careful. NTE is belly up and there are no more spec sheets online. The old SGS Thompson SK9072 "IS" the NTE 452. There is your spec sheet!

I Use 2N4416 (TO-72 package) in my ODS Build, and also in my SSS Build, and them working great! You only have to Bias them right!

get some NOS 2N4416 from slowakia, but the ones from Mouser will do it too.
DIY Amps: Marshall JTM45,Orange Grafik II 50W,Some 18W Marshalls,Dumble ODS 50W,Hiwatt DR103,Madamp G3 Blues,Dumble Steel String Singer, Fender Standalone Reverb 6G15,a few Hundred Pedals,like Uni-Vibe,etc,etc... :D

Has anyone tried a low-noise JFET such as the 2SJ74?

No reason you couldn't use a low noise JFET, but that one is a p-channel. Its n-channel complement is 2SK170. Both are getting hard to find now.

Dang I knew I was gonna get that backwards.

There are some modern substitutes, and it seems like a quantity of real Toshiba parts have found their way to the legit semiconductor market.
