miniHRM evolution

Post by mat »

I changed my miniHRM build (HRM pre with single EL84 as a power tube) into EF86 od section. I like the results very much. The amp is a joy to play. Not exactly a dumble sound but more squishy string attack which I seem to like. Quite loud when the PAB and od on. Short blues clip:

That's a very nice straight blues sound - perhaps an idea for Henry Heisthl/ Redplate - he has a lot of blues clients.

I liked that a lot Mat. :D

Sounds great but I think you wouldn't have a problem on just about any amp.

What guitar was that you used?

Thanks for the positive feedback ! The few d-builds I've complited and tweaked alot I've noticed that I like more of the amps that are little bit more forgiving. When comping some d-builds in some tweaking stages have been somewhat hard to play in comping style. They bark easily if stroked too heavily - I think that is the touch sensitivity

I've always loved Henrys (Redplate) amp sounds. They are the top on my book. Some day I will have the bucks (or euros) to make an order for a Blackverb amp :?

I played my Gibson ES-339 on the clip. First the middle pu position and after that the bridge position. I used 2 SM57's. One about 2 inches of the grill and the other about one meter from the grill cloth. Mics went in to Presonus Firepod and conneted by firewire in to macbook with Reaper recording software. I added reverb to the other guitar track. The amp had PAB on, OD on and MID boost off.
I recorded also with strat but then I used my iPhone to record and needless to say it did not sound very good.

I think my next build will be a V1 12AX7, V2 EF86, PI 12AX7, 2xEL84 power section and maybe add 2 tube reverb section also. But first I have to (start and) complite the dlator+2 tube reverb unit.

Thanks for listening the clip,
mat

I know what you mean about the touch sensitivity.
It's kind of hard for me to put into words but I find light single note picking brings out a bit more clarity and crunch.
Especially down low, awesome sound. (this is 4x 6L6 I'm talking about here).

There is such a pallet of possibilities tone wise with these amps making them very versatile and a great tool.

I can see where one of these amps would be a very good tool for the session musician.

That and a Tele, Strat and LP, you pretty much have your bases covered.

Mat,

I gotta say again what a pleasure it is to hear your playing!

The amp tone is great and your phrasing in playing is just superb. I probably have listened to that clip a dozen times now. You just nailed it, from my perspective.

I've heard ALOT of good blues in my life, and your tune sure got my foot tapping. Great sound clip, nice amp. Lots of great emotion and expression in that amp and your playing.

That amp and your style are a good match, IMO.

Thank you again for sharing it.

Best regards, 10thtx

Mat, I don't know much about Gibson guitars.
Is the 339 a thinner bodied guitar than a 335?

Thanks for the kind words :D About the playing, first take - nothing special imho.

I've studied luthierity for few years and mainly I play guitars I have made by myself. The 339 I bought has been my favourite since then. Great sound and playability. 339 is about same body size as Les Paul. Mine has the fat neck that I like alot. I do not own a 335 but I would quess its about same thickness as the 339. Some info of the 339: http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/F ... 0Presents/

I used my DIY 2x Eminence Delta pro 12A cabinet on the clip. Helped to get bigger sound from a tiny EL84 tube

Hope to record something with my strat or tele too in a near future.

Thanks again for listening !

Really sounds great Mat!

Here's a pic showing the size comparison of the 339 to a Les Paul & a 330 (330 is the same size as a 335, I think?).
