New 3rd gen build

Post by sonicmojo »

All,

After many weeks of sourcing parts and studying a lot of the resources available and suggested here, as well as completing several prior builds from kits, I am finally off the ground with a 3rd gen 50W build based on Tony's layout with a few tweaks. I thought I'd post some of my progress as I go. While waiting on parts, I've managed to complete most work on the chassis, eyelet boards, and a nice 212 cabinet which is now patiently waiting for the head to match. After testing/marking my cap foil directions today, I am about ready to start filling her up. Thanks to all who have shared incredible information here.

Lots of questions here.
Beautiful cab, by the way. suede?
Nice chassis too.
Did you make the chassis?
Where did you source the faceplates?
I thinking about a 2nd or 3rd generation build also.
Looking forward to hear how yours turns out.
Great work!

Great work so far!

In addition to all the questions CHIP/Greg asked I'm wondering what you are using for the transformers?

I have a bunch of NOS Fender 2 6L6 6 12AX7 PTs I'm itching to use so I'm wondering what you settled on.

Cab fabric is of sturdy velvet stuff I found at the Joann store here in Florida and had a similar type backing to tolex and went on well with tolex glue. I think it looks quite "suede-ish".

The chassis is a 20x8x2.5 blank that I am drilling and dremeling (a lot). The faceplates are a creation of my own.

My wife is a photographer and gets prints sometimes on 2mm styrene. I had a big hi-res print made from a photoshop graphic, enough for 2 copies of both front and back in case I messed up. I clear coated well with good nitro like I use on guitars before taping it to the chassis and drilled everything at once(very carefully). It's not pro material but looks pretty good to me and was economical for my project (about $35 or a 24x16 print with room to cut the 20x2.5 plates). We'll see how it holds up.

I went with Magnetic Components transformers. My transformer specifics are in the other current 3rd gen thread on that.

Thanks for your response.
Did you get the blank chassis from Mouser?

Watts Tube Audio, a.k.a. turretboards.com. It came pre-drilled for cabinet mounts which was not something I can do. It's pretty solid gauge stuff but I plan to reinforce the PT mounts just in case with an extra metal strip.

The cabinet is is simply perfect. The Vox grill cloth was a great choice. From what I can tell, the faceplates look nice too. Looking forward to the progress of the build.

I missed a couple of resistor values in my various parts orders so as I was waiting for replacements I took the time to build the shell head cab and fit the chassis to it while it was still empty and easy. I mostly filled up the boards as well but need to add the wires and solder next. My 10k trimmers were kind of small so I ordered replacements for those too. I should have them soon and be ready for the rest of the assembly. My FET is an NTE459 which is the NTE replacement for the 2n3823. This FET came with 4 leads and I plan to leave the "Case" lead unattached unless someone recommends otherwise.

I used 3 #10 biscuits for each join. I think it should hold up fine.
