Kemper Profiling Amplifier
This is a Dumble builder's forum, but since they claim to profile and emulate ANY amp including the already included FUCHS ODS 30 which (apparently) is Dumble based, I thought interesting to post this here.
http://www.guitarsite.com/news/amps/Kem ... Available/
Looks like we would be able to have all of HAD's different versions in one quick to go box!
I would personally take it over to Tony's (Talbany's) place, my first profile would be of his "102 Feedback City" specimen.
They don't state if any profiling sessions are included in the initial price, lots of expensive microphones and engineers for just one take!
I wonder how they figured to emulate the complete sound spectrum of an amp with just one guitar, one cab and with someone's peculiar "finger touch".
For US$2000.00 it better be good (no power section included), for they are going against US$400.00 75Watts Line Six Spiders.

I might be wrong, but I don't think they will be making any of the amp companies whose owners participate around here, to close shop in the near future.
Cheers!

Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
That looks pretty damn promising from what I saw in that profiling video. I think I'm gonna have to go try one.

Profiler
A friend of mine who lives in Denver got his hands on one of these to try out. He's very anti-modeling in nature. At the same time he also AB'd it against the most recent version of the Fractal Audio. He said hands down, the Fractal smoked it. In fact he bought a Fractal. Modeling technology is certainly getting better, but to my ear regardless of how good it gets, I think we're a long way from anything digital that reacts to the way you touch it like a guitar straight into a good amp.
I've had the opportunity to gig with a Fractal several times. While the sound is good, it's at times too good. It's alsmost Digital HI-FI......well, that's what it is exactly I guess......problem is, a guitar is not HI-FI.
And I do have to admit, I do like tinkering with all those parameters.

Digital modeling amplifiers are one small step away from a Guitar Hero game.
Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
Widespread Panic was on Austin City Limits Saturday night. Jimmy Herring had two Fuchs amps, flanking each side of a rack with a Fractal Audio gizmo in it. I thought "why?".
Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
The Fractal is much more than a modeling preamp. Many people find it well worth it's weight in effects processing. I have one and rarely use it for amp tones but find it very valuable as a processor for delays and reverbs.NickC wrote:Widespread Panic was on Austin City Limits Saturday night. Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
Several years ago I worked on something similar. The idea was to send various test signals through a stomp box and record both the output of the stomp box and the direct signal, and use this as training data for an artificial neural net.
The results were promising, but not perfect.
I think the issue is that this type of system can't directly model the amp, but only the amp and microphone. In fact, a lot of models in most emulators are based on the recorded sound, and not what we hear/feel. I thing dynamic range is missing in these models.
Limitations in the microphone and recording medium will never allow you to get an accurate model of what our ears experience.
I only have experience with some Line 6 models, and the models that come with Logic Pro, but rarely do I find any that can even properly mimic what happens when you roll back on the guitar's volume.

Ah ha! Very interesting and good to know. Thanks for the insight.

Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
Hi there,
I bought a Kemper Profiling amp some time ago. I profiled my Dumble clones and another DIY Marshall style hotrod and must say, this thing works very nice. I would say it reflects the amp to 98% percent. I used it on a song we did in the studio and it was a fantastic experience.
Getting fantastic sounds in no time. Great effects, a breeze to dial in (I had an 11Rack once and it does not even come close soundwise or else).
I might be able to profile a real Dumble soon and will share the profile.
My profiles run under Brute&Phatt and a lot of users on the Kemper forum really like them.
Thumbs up for this fine piece of machinery!
Cheers,
Electron

Can you link to any of your songs where you used the Kemper?

Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
Not a modeler but I think the Ethos Overdrive Guitar Pedal nails a Dumble really, really close. Apparently there's a model with a built in amp coming. I assumimg that it's a chip amp. It looks like delievery isn't very good from Ethos. http://www.customtonesinc.com/Home_Page.php
I have a Behringer V-Amp 3. Not as good as the real thing but it works amazing well, especially considering it cost $110.

Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
Hi Structo,
we are still working in the studio and have not completed the mix of the first song yet. I will try to record something at home, but this might take some time.
For starters here is a youtube clip by Peter Fischer using a profile of a Fuchs ODS (Overdrive Supreme):

Let me know what you think!

Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
While I really like the idea, and the modeler sounds good (for the most part) I'd like to hear some dynamics (guitar volume down to see if it cleans up like a good amp should). Pretty much everything I've heard is all out, wide open with a fairly steady pick attack.
Also, take a listen to the previously linked video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_Ts2_oZ5Vo ) starting @ ~3:35 or so. It seems that the "amp" has a hard time keeping up when multiple notes are played too quickly (?).

Re: Kemper Profiling Amplifier
Did a little digging & found a video that shows the profiler in a better light (to me).
Dave Cleveland using the guitar volume control to show the responsiveness.....pretty good to my ears.

And especially at this point w/ the PRS> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ucd-DsZm ... age#t=343s
