Bluetron Mini D

Post by Smitty »

There was a request for more participation by pro builders so I am posting my first ever D-style build. This is an ODS 102 inspired amp with a built in dumblator shoe-horned into a David Allen Princeton sized chassis.

Princeton power, Deluxe choke and Bandmaster output. Faceplate art by me cut by Jeanne at BNP. I have to say that there is nothing here out of reach for weekend warriors.

My construction style is a mix between Fender and Dumble. Coax is Belden brilliance headend video cable. 16pf/ft 26ga solid core with foil and 90% braid.

Lots of xicon metal films. Nichicon PWs (my new favs)

Happy to answer questions.

Clips if I get them before this one heads to Tokyo.

Many thanks to Gil, Tony and Brandon for sharing. Trying not to step on too many toes by building this. I think I'm filling a gap in the market. Zingaro might be close. Oh well! I'm certain that if it catches on others will offer it.

Always loved Boston back in the late eighties and early nineties when my company at the time would send me. Saw Black Flag at the Ratskeller(sp?).

Ian Faith: "The Boston gig has been cancelled..."
David: "What?"
Ian Faith: "Yeah. I wouldn't worry about it though, it's not a big college town."

Thanks for the pics!

Good job Smitty, thoughtful design on that layout. Hard work on such tight quarters.

All the best.

Looks like the voltage regulator for the relays 10thTx, but best wait for Smitty's answer.

All the best.

Mosfet?

Post by Smitty »

That's right, Horacio. It's the regulator for the relays.

Thanks for the kind words on the layout. I did spend an awful lot of time on that. Paid off with no oscillations and no excessive noise.

Internal trimmers for presence, treble bleed and OD2 grid. I decided that I like to control OD1 externally and set OD2 to clip just a little after OD1. I do this on the scope and it may require a reset if you put in an unbalanced twin triode. It works well to get OD1 right on the cusp of overdrive with the Volume control set anywhere you like. Then OD2 just tracks that.

It kinda looks like the eyelets to the left of the mosfet are not soldered...just an FYI.

Output grid zeners will be installed after the power tubes have burned in.
