Favorite ODS settings
I love to experiment with different sounds on my Quinnamp SDO. It seems that there is not an un-useful sound in it. Everything sounds good. I would love to know what others here are using for their favorite settings. If there is a resource for this online, I would certainly like to know about it. But, I would also like to know what people in the forum use for their favorite settings.
Re: Favorite ODS settings
For me it really kind of depends on the guitar, Volume settings, style, room, if your loops attached, tube types..etc, etc..Luddy wrote:I love to experiment with different sounds on my Quinnamp SDO. With that being said there is a point on the OD master where the tone begins to thicken up this generally occurs around 1 oclock so my OD master hardly falls below 12:00..
My OD drive is all over the place depending on guitar and Pup's output strength.. I like it pretty well saturated but not too squashed or too full of 3rd order so mine swings between 11 and 2 oclock.. Generally..
If volume is a great concern I always use the loop and grab an amp that has the OD trigger mounted on the outside so I can bump up the OD trigger as this will help to thicken the tone a bit without having to drive the output section harder..You have to be careful no to saturate the OD's input with too much gain otherwise you will bog it down and loose some sing..This works especially well with lower output Pups like standard (6/8k)single coils..
2nd gen amps OD stays thicker at lower volumes due to the absence of the OD master and 1m 180 voltage divider..FWIW these amps sound great in OD the louder you push them..Especially with Strats..

Also if you are a low volume concerns the bigger plate tubes (like and 803) will give you a thicker tone down low but don't seem to sustain and sing as well as the regular size 12AX/ECC 83's do..Overall it's still a balancing act between the pre and power amp
Hope this helps!!
Tony

I noticed that too, but I've found that when I have the OD Master that high, the clean channel is too quiet. I'm still trying to find a good way to balance things out.talbany wrote:With that being said there is a point on the OD master where the tone begins to thicken up this generally occurs around 1 oclock so my OD master hardly falls below 12:00..

In this respect Pot tapers do matter..aflynt wrote:I noticed that too, but I've found that when I have the OD Master that high, the clean channel is too quiet. is that Master on the amp that your talking about or the level next to the drive. So if it's the Master on 1 oclock do you attenuate with the level next to the drive, because that seems like it would be to loud for any situation
Re: Favorite ODS settings
If you are talking about my post then no.. I get the saturation I need off the drive control and set the master to balance the amp..I like for my OD to be a bit louder because I usually solo on the OD channel so I like my OD volume to be a bit hotter to override the band and punch out of the mix on stage so everyone can hear me, self included..Robben runs his 102 similar.. If you go listen to him live, listen for the stage vol shift when he steps on the OD switch...BTW My settings are similar to Robbens when I use humbuckers accept my presence which is usually around 7

Re: Favorite ODS settings
Tony, do you remember where you set your OD trimmer?
I think I have mine around 30K.
I was surprised at how low Robben sets his Drive pot.
It always sounded higher to me.
Of course that changes from gig to gig and in the studio.
On my amp there is a definite change as I roll the Drive up, right around 2:00.
That's where I like it.

Re: Favorite ODS settings
Most actual non HRM Dumbles have a 100K linear pot in the drive position. With that, you get most of your gain by the time you hit the 10 o'clock mark. Do you use an audio taper pot?

Re: Favorite ODS settings
The overdrive seems to increase a lot when you turn up the bass on mine. With the bass down I tend to run the gain a bit higher. Maybe that would explain the differences in peoples drive settings.
One weird thing I noticed on my #102 build is that I need to run the volume pot REALLY high compared to where I've seen others set it. The clean channel gets just barely dirty with single coils nailing a loud chord with the volume maxed. It's an old CTS pot I pulled out of a Quad Reverb, but it only measures 862k. I didn't think it would matter much wired as a voltage divider, but I'm starting to think maybe I should try to find a pot that measures closer to 1 meg.

Re: Favorite ODS settings
I don' t think you can make a valid comparison of relative knob position unless you are using the same pot taper. Also, you can't assume that every old CTS AUD pot or every AUD pot found in a 60's Fender is 30% taper either.aflynt wrote:

Good point. I should probably measure it throughout its travel and ensure that it is operating correctly.ToneMerc wrote:I don' t think you can make a valid comparison of relative knob position unless you are using the same pot taper. If I remember correctly my OD trigger on FB City is set at 28.5K to ground..I used AB 100k lin pots there and they measured (both) dead on 50k @ noon..
If you think about it, it kind of makes some sense gradually increasing gain throughout each stage..Trimmer 25-30k, Drive around 40-50k OD master around 60-70k...Dumble tone
BTW..If I am in a situation where I can crank the amp I prefer to back off the Drive a bit and raise the OD master

Thanks Tony!
Pretty sure I have a 250KA Drive pot and a 100KL OD Volume in my amp.

Re: Favorite ODS settings
I like to run the clean OD just above noon, at the point to where it's still clean but just on the verge of breakup. The OD drive is typically also just above noon, smooth saturation but not so much that you lose the dynamics. Tones to taste, usually close to noon but usually the mids are just a tad above noon and the treble just below.
Overall masters very low, 9:00 typically. I'll bet I'm the only guitarist the sound man has asked to turn up. He complains the drums bleed through and he can't get me up in the mix. I tilt the amp way back and use in-ears so there's little sound out front from my amp.

never thought of it this way
Thanks....
Would this be the same for most D style's ?
Just wondering about the larger audio pots(drive, level) used in the 183 circuit.
