Favorite tonestack for cleans
I know this is covered in various threads, but I'd love some people's opinions about their favorite stack for cleans.
I want to try to do a Dumble clean channel build, rather than something completely Fender. This is for someone who wants a clean amp and uses pedals for OD. He typically uses a Jazzmaster, but has a couple humbucking guitars as well.
Thanks!

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
Just to offer a different way of considering doing cleans ...........
This is my favorite clean tone. I prefer a 12AY7 in V1 but posted voltages with a 12AX7 in that position as a reference. 5751 sounds good there also.

Why do you prefer the IFR820 instead of a vacuum tube cathode follower?

Don't let that smoke out!

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
Fair question! Simple answer is that it was a logistical thing not having enough room to add another tube. The mosfet takes up very little space. Why do you prefer the IFR820 instead of a vacuum tube cathode follower?
Having said that, I can not tell that it colors the tone in a negative way at any level. Clean sounds like "all tube" to my ears.

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
Because there will be no difference in tone between cathode or source/emitter follower. It does not provide voltage amplification which is responsible for tube/transistor "feel".

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
LOL, my thread's been hijacked by a MOSFET.
Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
IMHO, the low plate classic clean side sounds great with single coils.
Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
I agree, I would start there. Gaz for a build, search for Aaron's Odyssey posts.ATL Strat wrote:IMHO, the low plate classic clean side sounds great with single coils.

ATL and TM, does the low plate classic stay squeaky clean, or is it possible to dial in just a touch of hair?ToneMerc wrote:I agree, I would start there. Gaz for a build, search for Aaron's Odyssey posts.ATL Strat wrote:IMHO, the low plate classic clean side sounds great with single coils.

I'm also looking for those great bell-like or piano-like tones from a Strat, but like just a touch of grit when I dig in.
It's never too late to have a happy childhood.
Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
You can get some nice hair on it. The amp alone can do that, but I like to hit mine with a clean boost like a Katana on the front end (especially if I'm using low output single coils). If you turn it up, you can add in some nice power tube distortion too, which sounds great.

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
Cool, I think I'll try that first. So low plate classic is:
#124 with a stack comprised of 100K slope, 330p/.1uf/.05uf caps, and 250KA/100KL/250KA pots?

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
Yes, but I prefer a .001uf (Orange Drop) instead of the 330p ceramic. You might want to try both. I also like to keep the V1 voltages down lower around 175-180v.Gaz wrote:Cool, I think I'll try that first. So low plate classic is:

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
That's interesting about the big treble cap for cleans since most prefer a larger value for OD stuff. The Zinky designed Fenders actually drop the treble cap to 150p, which I've never tried myself.
Looking at the #124 schem, what is the purpose of the two .01uf in series to ground off the bass pot's wiper? BTW, I plan on only using the Rock mode stack.

The two caps in series come out to a .005uf. I think he was just using what he hand. I used a .0047uf there, but rarely if ever use jazz mode.

Re: Favorite tonestack for cleans
I too think the low plate tone stack sounds good for single coils.
My 50w D'Lite started out that way and I did a lot of experimenting with it.
But the high plate amp has a bit more gain.
If you dial back the Master and turn up the preamp volume you can drive it into some distortion.
That's what I like about these Dumble amps, the wide range of tones you can get as well as having a 100 watts at your disposal.
Although I do prefer using my humbucker guitars with them.
