Strat/Dumble. Always a problem for me until today!

Post by tag101 »

I have owned more than my share of Strats, (and I LOVE Strats!), but I gave up on them quite a while ago because I could never get a good overdriven tone into any of my D style amps. I was lucky enough to recently have picked up a Bruno Cowtipper however, and Strats were always THE guitar into those amps for what I like. Anyway, I have been searching for a cool Strat, and found one in the new fender Custom shop limited series. Its a 56 heavy relic, with an Ash body, Maple neck/fretboard, and there fat 50s pups which I never really cared for. Its obscene how good it sounds through the Cowtipper, but the big surprise was when i plugged it into the Quinn 183. MAGIC! FINALLY a Start that I can love with my D style amp. :) I am very lucky to be in such a tonefull place right now. I am also off work as of next week for 2.5 months, so I can practice my arse off. VERY GOOD! Low quality video clips below, but it gives an idea.

Sounds nice! My strat neck p/up into my HRM OD, no pab or mid, sings and blooms like a BIRD at low volume, with plenty of hi end, hit pab and ALL HELL breaks loose! Hope yours does that! I do my own thing w/these amps, not exactly like dumble.

peace, jim

Hey Jim,

Would you be able to elaborate on your tweaks, especially to make it bloom and sing with a Strat?

Regards,
Mo

Sounds good, must be the ash body and fat 50's PUP. I'm going to have to check them out.

OK,
I had time to do a real clip tonight. Here is a first take, bridge pup straight into the TKT with TRex verb and Boss DD3 in the loop. (No Dumblator)
I kept playimng until I ran out of ideas and messed up a bit.

Love thois tone though, and those HUGE lower mids on 183 making a single coil strat sound like a huge humbucker. DO IT DR.D!!!

Sounds very nice! I particularly like when the playing and tone is a little more "rude."

I just found out a few things. First my settings were Volume 1 at 11 oclock, all tone controls at 12 oclock, gain 2 at 11 oclock, overdrive level at 11 oclock, and MV down pretty low. Amp was about shouting volume. The presence was at 1 oclock, and no PAB. The one thing I do differently is use the mid boost. Here is another take into the Quinn 183 6L6 version. All settings about the same. With this guitar, the 6L6 is slightly smoother, but not as 3D sounding in the room.

Sounds great! My Strat sounds really nice into my #102 clone too, but it does have slightly hotter pickups (Lollar Specials). This may sound strange, but how much and what brand of cable are you running into the front of the amp? I've found that a bit more cable capacitance helps take the edge off of a Strat really well.

Not Strange at all - I've found that 4m (12ft) of George L cable between my strats and amp is too trebly. The George L goes well wit a Fender Esprit (squire) and my strats like (higher capacitance) Fender cable much better.
Diva or not? - Respect for Mr. D's work....)

Thanks. I am glad you like it!

Re: 183... Tonally no. I have it. (Thanks to Shad.) Psychologically yes. There was something about seeing an actual Dumble just sitting here that always put a smile on my face, and inspired me to play. It was living a dream. I would never have sold it if the economy did not go into the $hitter. I am very lucky to have survived the way I have though, so all is well in the end. (Or at least a lot better than it could have been) I am a very luck person to have been able to own and enjoy one for as long as I did.
