Fender Vibr-O-Dee Mod

Post by Smitty »

I posted a mod to old Fender amps in the file section. Turns the normal channel of an AB763 to a dedicated overdrive channel. Must sacrifice the vibrato tube. Good stuff for guys not ready to take on a scratch build.

I saw while you were posting in the Dumble files section. Is this similar to the mods that Dumble did?

Thanks for the info!

Wow. Feeling kind of snubbed... Not a lot of pro builders aside from Toney sharing much around here these days. Gonna have to think twice next time.

I've made my living exclusively from building amps for nine years and built some serious D-style amps. To my ears (and everyone that's heard them) these amps rival well built clones for convincing early D-style tones. Not as versatile as the full Monte but the meat and potatoes early RF OD sound everyone is chasing is there.

Have you taken a peak at the schematic I posted?

I posted here because I think this mod may have merit in this discussion area. Not everyone who wants D-style tones is able to tackle a scratch build. I think this mod is a great way to begin learning how to build these circuits and see what makes them tick. Sort of an OD 101 if you will.

Do with it what you will.

I've been watching the new Fender area. Seemed very tweed centric.

You are very welcome, Lefty. It is my pleasure to spread the good word.

I'm not sure this resembles Mr Dumble's mods. To be honest I'm not that familiar with his Fender mod work, although you would think I should be.

I really love the stuff he did for Robben and try to make that sound available to my customers who cannot afford $3K for one of my amps. It's a great mod and I'm just trying to get the word out. There is a boat load of these amps out there and with a little work they are a great amp to gig with.

I hear a lot of folks say they prefer the Fender clean over the Dumble. This is how you skin that cat. When you dedicate four gain stages to just OD then things get pretty simple.

I've been doing this mod for awhile and it's fairly mature so if you copy it closely you should get really good results.

Just trying to give back.

I think this post and the posts you did in the files section belong where they are. This is about modding a Fender to have a Dumble-style ODS channel.

I'm going to keep this in mind when I come across a silvery faced Fender specimen.

Seems a great way to get from A to B without a full Dumble build.

Hmmmmm.......got TWO SF MV Twins (given to me by a friend) in the shop right now that I've been wondering "What the heck am I going to do with these?"

I think I just got my answer!

Thanks Smitty!

Wow. Feeling kind of snubbed
no snubbing intended - I value your input but do feel this still belongs in fenderland.

I think (?)kendrick orginally popularized this mod ?about 20 years ago - I read the article maybe 7 years ago.

cheers - you more than welcome.

Yes fenders are great amps for clean tones - is a dumble - clearly not - can it be made to sound like the clean channel - mostly yes with a few mods.

sorry man - I'm a purist.

Well it's not a Dumble before or after the mod. It's not a Fender after the mod, but the discussion is about adding a Dumble quality to a Fender. I guess it could be posted on either forum. Where would it have been posted a few months ago? Isn't it good wherever it is, but now it's in two places? Well that's a bummer. I guess Tom will figure it out.

I kinda like my AB763 the way it is... all chimey or fat and bold, or surfy, or throbbing like crazy to get the girl's attention. Yeah, I like that. Just the way Leo intended.

I think you guys are going to enjoy this mod. Can't really take any credit for the circuits, but when I completed the last one of these I finally got to a point where I was comfortable with the way the OD components were fitting into the vibrato eyelets. Just had to share the layout with my friends here.

Please spread the word and let these wonderful old work horses claim some new glory! Leo and Howard in the same amp. Yeah, baby! Maybe we could call it "The Love Child" or something groovy like that!!

As a certified knobaholic I'm diggin' the bright cap pot. Tweak-O-Riffic!

My Twin has 210 ohms of power resistors after the rectifier to drop the B+ to ~400V and is running a pair of 6V6s with the speakers wired in series for 8K at the plates. Beefy and breathing at the same time. Deluxe killer. Problem is it feels like it's bolted to the floor at the end of the night!
