Dumble Overdrive Special to be reviewed in Premier Guitar

Post by bryanclark »

Hi everyone,
newbie to the forum -excited to be a member!

Just I thought I would get the word out that we will be extensively reviewing and documenting a 1983 Dumble Overdrive Special Ser.#0133 with Premier Guitar Magazine and on our own new show - The A/B Tone Show. There is a great history behind this amp. In addition, to the PG review, we will be making a more detailed study of this amp.

We also have an upcoming episode with a 1966 Park Amp WITH the white banana knobs AND the Park Fuzz Pedal!

I will post a link up when we get it finished.

anyone interested in past episodes:

p.s. y'all will no doubt see some fun outboard gear as well.

Cheers,
Bryan

Welcome to TAG, Bryan. I don't think we have any documentation on #133, so I'm looking forward to it.

Also very interest in the Park. Hope you guys can take some measurements on both.

Hi Bryan & welcome home.
You like tone, you'll like it here.
We don't always agree, but we agree to dis-agree.
Looking forward to the Park & #133.

And, if you've been reading here you know what constitutes a "detailed" study ;^)

Martin,

yeah.."detailed" is - now knowing and viewing the forum - an overstatement on my part! I'm just a humble pro player. Schematics, etc are not in my wheelhouse. BUT, that said, I'll try to make something interesting. We will certainly have some great audio/video files of the amp.

Anything anyone wishes specifically? We will be filming today at 10am Central.

can anyone give me a link/etc to the history? My source here is Nashville (who has several Trainwrecks, EJ's Marshalls, the Park, etc..) is out of town, and I cant get my hands on his Dumble book. I scoured the forums for something historical but didn't find anything before I crashed. I have ascertained that it is a 4th generation ODS and I know the history of THIS particular amp, but anything more general would be much appreciated. I'll be sure to send a shout-out to The Amp Garage on our episode (which will be out after the PG episode).

Cheers,
Bryan

TAG member Ayan Gil, who documented #124 is very knowledgeable, and I'm sure he will see this thread.

Member Max is a font of information on D-amp evolution. I haven't seen him post just lately, but I sent him a PM with a link to this thread.

As you can see from the Dumble files section, several amps have been documented thoroughly by Tony Albany and others, with #124 being the closest SN to the one you have. Do you plan on getting inside to take photos of the boards and controls? Is the preamp board covered in silicone to hide the component values?

The basic info that determines what type of amp it is (and the things people here will want to know) are:

Tube type (6L6 or EL34)

Transformer type (usually Fender Twin or Marshall 100W)

Is it a straight ODS or an ODS with HRM (the extra TMB EQ inside, after the OD section)

What value are the plate load resistors on the clean and OD stages (100k across the board for "low-plate'" and 220k/150k for "high-plate")

What type of tone stack ("Classic" or "Skyline")

Several other components are varied from one SN to the next for each player, and it would take a trained eye to spot those. Good close-ups of the boards and controls would tell that story.

Thanks for your interest!

It would be nice if you offered raw audio in at least 24bit wav for download, no post processing, plus track info i.e. mics & placement, what speakers etc etc.
Will you guys by any chance be at Nashville AmpExpo in September?

OK everyone,

we have completed the Premier Guitar video/audio demo of the Dumble Overdrive Special ser#133. We are also going to be doing a more in-depth review of it and hopefully snapping some pics under the hood. anything I should be aware of when opening the chassis?

On another note, I do have the fist part of our demo/review of a 1966 Park amp with a straight cabinet up on youtube. should be live in 10 minutes.

here is the link:

Bryan...Welcome

4th generation "classic" ODS manufactured ROUGHLY from around #095 to around #140

Here is a 4th generation (low Plate 100k classic) #124 in it's original state before the upgrade to Skyliner (see Below) and could be similar to the one you are reviewing..I would imagine your readers would be interested in knowing if 0133 had also been upgraded or modified by HAD at some point in time like 124 and many other earlier made amps..I would be happy to help you with that!!

Transition/ 4th Generation in original (classic) state

After the Skyline update

Some famous tones generated by low plate classics are Larry Carlton/Last Nite CD..(along with some serious outboard tone shaping effects)
Robben Ford Talk to your Daughter CD (low Plate Classic #102) later upgraded to high plate skyline

Ry Cooder Boarderline amp (low Plate Classic w/Tremolo) discussed here

I hope this info helps..Let me know if I can help further''Premiere guitar has always been kind to me and is a wonderful publication!!

All The Best
