Ceriatone HRM 50 - what do the internal trimmers do?

Post by The_Nuge »

Hi!
Now that my Ceriatone HRM 50 is up and running, I still have a few questions... As these aren't stricktly related to the build, I thought I'd start a new thread. And yes, I did search for answers, but didn't find any...

What do the internal trimmers do, or rather, what are the recommend settings for these?

Ceriatone recommends setting the HRM trimmers at 10-12 o'clock for bass, 12-1 o'clock for mid and treble to 11 o'clock. Anyone have other opinions or tips, and preferably some resistance values to go along with those?

I've found info on the PI trimmer, so we don't need to get into that.

What does the last trimmer on the main board, the one "above" V2, do, and what are the recommended settings for it?

I guess you didn't read the Ceriatone manual, pages 15-17.

I did actually! The trimmer on the left in the picture is the PI. The one I'm curious about is the next one over, just to the right of center in the picture, do? That one's not mentioned in the manual!

I don't think were talking about the same trimmer - my amp has it's OD trimmer on the back panel... And I'm not talking about the 3 HRM tonestaack trimmers either - those are on a separate panel!

The trimmer on the pre amp board in line with V-2 is the overdrive trimmer
on the tube side of the trimmer set it at 24k as a starting point.
And read this. http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18953
Have a nice trip.

Exactly.
The back panel trimmer is for fine tuning the OD input without opening the
cabinet.
Very handy.

The Trimmer shown is the standard 250K fed from a 100K resistor.

If there is an external panel pot for adjusting the OD - either it's been placed in series with the above trimmer of the above trimmer is not actually in circuit any more?

If you have the 2 pots in series then I'd say that the total resistance will not be correct according to established specs for this type of amp.

From what I've seen on C'Tone "Layouts", the Trim Pot is normally removed when an external pot is used for OD adjustment. Perhaps it's simply been bypassed with a link on the reverse of the board?

The HRM 50 I built had the external trim and the trimmer on the board

Hi!

My layout is the same as rogb's layout - with both trimmer and pot!

@ rogb: any idea what you set your trimmer at?

Cheers

Sorry bud, I sold it years ago.
After trying to used measured trimmers, I end up setting everything by ear.
Tweak it till it sounds right with the guitar you plan to use.

I think doing it by ear is the way to go, but can obviously be a bit tedious :-)

I am going to wait until I get my 112 with EV done, the I'll open it up again and have a mate play the guitar while i fiddle with the internals.

I have done some tube rolling too: at the moment my favourite combination is EH in V1 and V3, JJ Std. in V2. The 6L6s are Tube-Town, but I have some JJs to try as well. Wit the current combination the clean is wonderful. OD is good at lower OD settings, but gets fizzy when I dial up rear pot. Also the whole thing is very bassy on the OD channel going into one "channel" of a closed-back 212 with Celestions.
