Need Dumble Advise

Post by Dave Lotek »

I was drawn to this forum because of the Trainwreck Amp. But it seems the Dumble Amp might be better suited for my sound. I am clueless as to what is available today. Does someone make a kit, are there commercial renditions available? I used to be a tube Hammond Organ Tech and believe I could build one if I knew more. This forum is a real eye opener, but I could use some advise. I mainly finger pick a Telecaster (with my finger tips). Most amps are too scratchy for this but from what I’ve heard, I think a Dumble approach would work. Thanks for any and all advise

Dumble's take a nice firm attack, but respond well to dynamics so I'd agree, with your fingle style playing it'll be excellent for you.

Search through the Dumble files section, you'll see ODS101 schematics. Also look around for the D-Lite kit, excellent way to get going.

I would second the D-lite kit. Check out the Clips!

Greetings,

Get yourself the new D'Lite kit, make the amp -- and live happily ever after! It sounds excellent, and it shall make Telecaster sound very good, indeed!

Here is the link to the kit page:

Dumble ??? Continued

Post by Dave Lotek »

Thanks for your advise. It seems the kits are in short supply, so as a plan B, I have a BOM and excellent layout pics and schematics. I am planning a scratch build if the kit is back ordered at the time of purchase. If I scratch build the chassis, what is the best tube position? Upright, upsidedown, sideways? Also, would there be any advantage to using coax shielded wire for the heaters instead of twisted pairs? Thanks for any and all advise, I'm all ears.

Howdy Dave-
Historically, HAD built both the combos and heads "Fender" style (tubes down) but I prefer a "Marshall" style (tubes up) Head but only for heat dissipation issues. Either will work fine; my only caveat-
If you build a tubes-up style you can get beer etc. poured into the inner workings of the amp thru the top vents...Never put your beer etc. on top of your amp! Hope this helps and +1 for the D'lite; either kit or DIY.

PS- If you have the BOM spreadsheet normster posted on brownnote, add
2x 1.0 ohm 1% 1 watt precision resistors for the bias test points. Norm'll
be adding them to the BOM if he hasn't already.

Is it really true that they do not have any more kits?!

Thanks for your reply. I assume they have some kits at this time but I doubt if any of this batch will be there when time comes for me to place an order. Purchasing a kit is my first choice and I will no doubt check availability before going with plan B. Following is a copy of some dialog by the site administrator about the kit which will probably be discontinued.

"Yes it is a limited run, and the folks that reserved and paid for their kits going back as far a Nov are just now getting their goods. After all orders are filled, there will be a some stock available for a few more kits to be sold.

I have been filling orders on a fisrt-come-first-served basis, and will continue to do so.

This means, if you really want a D'lite at this point , I recommend placing your back-order now. The wait for backorders will not be as long as the wait for the initial offering, because all of the bugs have been worked out of the system at this point, and it's just amatter of having some more transformers made and placing some parts orders.

I hope this helps.
In a nutshell...yes they are available, on a back-order basis, and the expected wait is 3-6 weeks tops.

At some point in the near future this product will be discontinued as a kit."

We may make a few kits available later, but the response was so overwhelming that we were totally swamped. Moss, in particular, pretty much had to put his life on hold for a couple months. The was no margin on the kits and it didn't leave him any time to fill amp orders (which are backing up and also provide him with income).

If we can figure out a way to supply the kits without it impacting Moss's business, we may start it up again (maybe with just the chassis, trannies, and boards to keep it simple).

For those of you that got kits, you're going to love the amp!!! I just completed build #6 and all builds are very consistent using the kit.

BTW, if you'd like to build the amp but don't want to wait for a kit, you can still get the chassis from BrownNote. Hopefully Moss will drop into this thread and give a status on transformers and boards (which were completely sold out last time we talked).
