Advice on best 1x12 speaker

Post by pedro »

Hi all. I just finished my second ODS. A 50watt 102 circuit. I gigged with it last weekend and it was great but I am having to use a 1x12 set up at moment after letting go of my larger car which let me take a 4x12 cab. The 1x2 has a Celestion v30 in it which isn't ideal. What's the view on best speaker for a1x12 set up? I am aiming for Robben tones. I use a McCarty and telecaster mainly. Also an sg and Paul for some stuff. I can build new cab to suit. I have been considering celestial heritage g12h65, eminence rwb and delta pro 12a. Any thoughts. I know v30 won't be doing the amp justice really. Cheers Pete.

I have had great luck with older and current production G12-65 and EVM12L Classic, not so much the older EVM12L

I agree the G12-65 is the way to go here, even in a 1 x 12 configuration. That's what I use with my 50W #102.

Celestion or EVM in the Dumble design open back single 12 cab is a preferred choice for open. EVM in a TL806 cab for closed.
Different strokes.
I use TL806 for large venues and outside, Weber NeoMag paper dust cap in a D-style open for smaller.
Both work well.

I like the EV12L over the G1265, and am surprised by the Emenence "Swamp Thang". Might be my favorite of the bunch.

As you can tell both 65's and EV12L's are the most popular here!!
Purely a matter of taste between the 2..IMO!!
EV's can be somewhat punchier and more accurate low end (More Powerful) less sag when pushed!!
so if you play at loud volumes for long periods EV's will have the edge..
Celestion's.. what can you say!! Great speaker and has that Celestion breakup tone most here LOVE!!

RF Tones I would go for the 65...(Watch the VOL!!)
BTW..The Swamp thing I really like in OD..Big Thick.. But lack some sparkle in the Clean side.. This is the speaker of Choice for The Rev. Billy G..:D
Good Luck!

A number of other options:
I have used various speakers with good results with my own amp and other ODS style amps: WGS makes a copy of the G 12-65 , AFAIR called ET 65,
which I personally preferred over the Celestion in an AB test, a little cleaner,
less "british" sounding IMO. Fuchs amps uses the Eminence
Red White and Blues, also a good speaker with D-style amps, maybe lacking a little sparkle, but a nice smooth OD tone.
I also owned an Eminence "Texas Heat" for a while, also a very versatile speaker. Like most people here I am not a fan of the V 30 in this application,
if you want to use Celstions you can try the G12- 80 or G 12-100,
if available. AFAIK HAD also recommended these.
A friend of mine has a 2Rock cab loaded with Scumback Alnicos which is awesome but expensive. I personally use Tone Tubbies, certainly not for every taste.
Hope this is helpful

Many thanks Guys - plenty to consider !
I'm erring towards the Celestion G12-65 for now but will probably buy an eminence as well soon to compare the two.

I just found the 1x12 cab design with oval port so will build one up to use the speaker in.

Cheers

Don't forget the WGS speakers too like the ET 65 it is a very good speaker.

I have the Celestion G12-65, EVM 12L and Swamp Thang speakers they all sound great.

Ok ,

i think I am leaning towards the G12-65 in a TL806 home built cab.
Funny how the Celestions are so much more expensive even here in the UK than the American speakers ! - you US guys provide some great value ! - i think next speaker will be a WGS or Eminence to go with the G1265, when I have more transport space again....My PA takes up so much room !

I just found a few sound samples on the net and think the G1265 and TL806 sounds like a great combination.

As the TL806 was designed around the EV's should I make any changes to the TL806 plans or just run with them as they are ?
cheers all

The 12G65 in a thiele cab, might not be a winning combination. On the other hand Shur use Celestion vintage 30 (12H30) in a ported cab for his Badger amps. So maybe the 12G65 can be used as well.

If you want to try the 12G65 in a ported cab, my advise would be, instead of building a Tl806 cab, build a simpler ported cab with round ports, that you can adjust (cut to length) in order to get the bass boost right for the 12G65. Similar to the Dumble cab Larry Carlton uses (although he use EV's in his).

thanks all,

i ordered a g12-65 this afternoon, and will try an existing open back cab with it first then will probably try a ported cab for comparison - I have a spare mid range 12inch PA driver cab that I can convert.

Cheers all

I have a EVM-12S that sounds pretty good with my HRM in a ported cab. There were some threads a few years ago about these 12S speakers.

This one is not mine, but shows a 12-S also:

I just got a Swamp Thang to go with my collection of G12-65s and Cannabis Rex. Look forward to giving it a blast in the new amp :D
