Shielded wire for Master/Loop distance?

Post by hans-jörg »

Hello,
I want ask if it is useable to shield the wire between Master (Lug 2) and the loop jacks.
I mean its a long distance through the half chassis and hot.
The layouts and schems here dont show this, but Ceriatone, let say, shows it on the layout of ODS and F. Mustang.
I hav`nt shielded for now (with no problems) because I´m afraid to loose some "breathing" of the amp. I think to shield it is like a unwanted "corsett", you know what I mean?

Whats your opinion?

I have experimented with it on my 124 clone.. had both wires from the master pot shielded with rg174. (to the relayboard and the effectloop). Then I plugged a 1m shielded cable into the effects send and return and noticed dramatic volume loss and high end. That led me to remove the shielded cables (and replace them with normal wire) from the master volume as well. I think it sounded a bit better. More full and dynamic. No increase in hiss or instability.

Little bit late, but ...:

thank you,

but NL was close enough - too close.

As you see - Austria needs such "exceptions" to win at least once a half decade 8)
But not everybody is happy with this win

I used shielded cable from the master volume control to the effects loop jacks.

I did this as I had an issue with noise, when the volume was set to "4" there was a noise. I did try moving the wire to other locations in the chassis and the noise got worse. At this point I realized shielded cable was the best option.

As far as loses go, I didn't hear a difference between the regular wire and the shield cable. RG174 has a capacitance value of 100pF per metre, I estimate, the capacitance value would have been 33pF. I don't think that would make a huge difference tonally anyway.

In closing, I not disagreeing so much as explaining why I used shielded cable and the rational I employed.
Yours Sincerely

Hi Mark,
thank you for pics.
So the best would be to listen if there is noise w/o shielding and if ...

btw. what is this at the back of your master? I can see a restistor but not the rest.

I have Gil Aron's high cut filter in this amp, I put it there to accommodate Fender guitars, I found the high cut wasn't needed with guitars equipped with humbuckers. So I made it switchable.

If you don't have a noise issue then you probably don't need shielded cable. As stated before I found I had the wire from the wiper in the quietest position and to pursue a vastly different path for the master wiper wire where there was no noise meant tearing the amp to pieces. Shielded cable was the best option as I could have pulled the amp apart and still had the noise problem. Shielded cable was a guaranteed fix, I did A/B before installing properly in the amp and I couldn't hear a difference.

Thank you for explanation, Mark.

I´ll check out if shielding is better or not.

I asked, because I saw pictures here with and w/o shields. There are also different layouts to this case. So its aquestion of necessarity.

May I ask how this High Cut Filter of Gil looks like (schem/layout)? Sounds to be a "spezial" one. At the pic I cant find it out.

Thank you
Hans-Jörg

Edit, oh, I think its a switch able master pot, therefore the location.
