Speaker choice

Post by JamesO »

Hi everyone

It seems like people like variations of the Celestion 65: Eminence RWB, the TR1265 and 1265R, Scumback H75, the Celestion Heritage 65...

Why is this? These are fender derivitives, so why aren't people using things like the reissue Jensens? I'm still learning about speakers, but I'm trying to choose something for my D Lite/Two-Rock build (D Lite with Two-Rock values where the D Lite is different). I'd been set on just getting the Jensen reissue, but now I'm a bit confused.

Find yourself a EVM 12L as nothing else comes close.

The Jensen Reissues are generally low powered speakers and designed for a certain threshold of breakup which complemented the amps the original speakers were used for. When the speakers break up the add their own coloration which is usually not desirable for an amp with a clean running power stage.

All D-style amps are designed to have a clean running power stage, i.e. the sound is mainly created by the preamp. This design usually calls for a speaker with an increased power handling ability. That's why one of the classical speakers for a D-style amp is the Electro Voice EVM 12L. Celestion is a company that provides conservative power ratings.

I use a Celestion G 12 H (the 100W model) with either my modded Deluxe Reverb II or modded Concert and I am not planning to change it. Alternatively I use a D-style cabinet with a Jensen Neodym 12". This sounds great with both amps as well.

This is not to say that a Jensen Reissue will not work. Best advice is to try before you buy.

Also check the speaker threads in this forum (there are at least two).

Pure opinion ensues -- there are two schools of Dumble players. The Larry Carlton school uses the EV12-L or a similar Altec like the 417-8H. That's one heavy, late breakup speaker. The Robben Ford school likes Celestions and thanks to the competitive spirit, there are a ton of options from several manufacturers. There's at least one massively long speaker thread here.

FWIW I have 2 Recoton Jensen reissue 12's in a Twin. The are OK in the Twin, but my HRM does not sound good with them. They just don't have enough definition and had some a mid bump that I dont like. Guess they work ok for the twin since the mids on the amp are scooped pretty good. I tried a Celestion version of a EV 12 (not sure of the model #) but it sounded great, just like an EV - even response, no coloration. I use 2 Hellatone 30's and they sound pretty good, but I had to tailor the amp to compensate for the extra bass the speakers have, which could be an issue when using the head with another cab. I tried a reissue Greenback in tandem with a Hellatone just yesterday and like it a lot. Also tried 2 older Greenbacks and was less impressed. The speakers sounded tired.

Thanks guys

Some good stuff here. Darkblue and Tonegeek, I'm really interested in the type of sound you guys are getting with the Jensens. I think I'm so iffy on the speaker because I hear a lot of heavily overdriven or smooth jazz type sounds in sound clips.

Have you guys heard the sound Derek Trucks gets on Susan Tedeschi's album, Hope and Desire? He plays on tracks 1 and 4, then dobro on 3. It's a really warm, slightly broken up sound. I REALLY like it. It would be great if I could get close.

That amp was tweaked here in Denver by Fat Willie, it's a BF Super with Silver mica trable caps and a couple of Orange drops here and there,

All stock values, the trick is that he plugs into the reverb channel, but pulls V1 so that the cathode resistor on V2a is 820 ohms. Dereck uses Pyle Driver 10" car speakers. You can get them from Fat Willie 303 778 1156,

Tell him a bald Asshole sent you, he'll know who you mean!!

Funny, I happened on this combination by accident. I'm really liking it.

Tone Tubby Alnico hemp cone treated or double dipped for a bit more high end. One each is good too.

Most but not all Dumbles were designed around an EV 12L. If your tuning the amp and are looking for the tone, an EV 12L is a must.

Electro-voice has reissued the EVM-12L (see their website: http://www.electrovoice.com/productfamilies/72.html

I haven't heard them yet, has anyone on the forum?

Also, isn't the new Eminence speaker supposed to be modelled on the EVM-12L? Haven't heard that one either.

Not Robben's and that seems to be a grail, no??

I have a reissue EVM12L. Sounds like the old ones. Very nice, but I much prefer the Celestion G1265.

Scott, how different is the Celestion from the Two-Rock 1265? I'm thinking about just going with the Two-Rock speaker since I'm doing my best to copy their amp and like John Mayer's sound.

Does John Mayer use Red White and Blues? Every TR 1265 I have heard sounds identical to the Eminence RWB. If I were stuck on getting a TR speaker, I would get the 1265R from them. It is clearer sounding. The cleans are muddy with the RWB by comparison.

The Celestion G1265 is really a great sound...
