2nd Gen Build
I hear we are building 2nd Gens around here....
I am going for the the 1st Gen/2nd Gen David Lindley tone with this amp and thought it would be appropriate to make it a tribute to the man himself.
I am using Erwin's excellent chassis and board set on this one. Have a head cab in the works from guitar cabinets direct. Snakeskin tolex of course.
Got the chassis graphics completed and loaded up with hardware. Working on populating boards now.

Re: 2nd Gen Build
Mostly piher resistors, a combination of el menco and Mallory brown drops and Sprague di-film caps. Some old mepco rn60e for v1 and v2 plates and old Dale 50k for v3 plates with a 5k trimmer. Cathode caps a mix of old bc Philips and new Sprague TE, cathode resistors a mix of old big green Dale and brown IRC. Filter caps Jupiter cosmos wet electrolytics. Some other little goodies here and there.
Seasoned bassman transformers and choke and some nos tubes to roll when the time comes.

Looks great Dan! Where do you get all those NOS parts from? Ebay?dbharris wrote: ↑Mon Feb 19, 2024 12:23 pmMostly piher resistors, a combination of el menco and Mallory brown drops and Sprague di-film caps. Looking forward to see the final amp!

Thanks guys!
Yes, parts were mostly from eBay and the transformers from Reverb. Though it seems like the "right" parts are getting harder to find. I was searching for the proper Mepcos for like 2 years with no luck.
I still have not found a shielded cable that I love, but trying a new kind on this build...we shall see.

Looks like a great build Dan!
If it’s any help - I found a bunch of different coax at MarVac Electronics. They even have RG-59 in different colors. Pretty sure they have an e-bay store or you can Google them to get to their website.
Looking forward to watching this build

Thank you! Yes MarVac had some good stuff, especially if you need NTE parts. I had never looked at their shielded cable before. May give it a try some time.Raoul Duke wrote: ↑Wed Feb 21, 2024 1:54 am Looks like a great build Dan!

Another source for wire and connectors is MarkerTek. I just got some violet mini RG59 that seems good and we all know the correct color is very important to tone
https://www.markertek.com/product/bl-48 ... k-per-foot
I've also bought some very flexible 6 conductor that's excellent for the pedal cable
https://www.markertek.com/product/mg-w2 ... e-per-foot
Free Shipping over $50.

I solder better than I play.

Re: 2nd Gen Build
Thanks for all of the wire suggestions, I have favorited those for the next time I place an order. Been slow going on the amp while I am swamped at work. But wanted to post a little progress.
Main board Power board FET (trying a J201 for this build) Hopefully will have more time this week.

Thanks Ian!
Re: 2nd Gen Build
Finally had some time this weekend to work more on the amp. I wanted to thank all of the people who have helped with this build, whether it be sharing parts, advice, the layout, corrections to the layout etc. this forum really is great!
I got most of the chassis wiring sorted. Still have a bit more to do before I add the boards and iron.

Hi Dan, I notice that all of your coupling caps shields are orientated toward the pots. Do tell why?dbharris wrote: ↑Mon Feb 26, 2024 1:00 am Thanks for all of the wire suggestions, I have favorited those for the next time I place an order. If you look at the photos in the 2nd Gen Layout thread, that is how HAD did it. In the 3rd Gen amps, I believe all but one of the caps were also oriented that way (maybe bass, but I am going off memory). I've seen many statements to the effect that coupling cap orientation only changes the noise floor, while others say it is one the many ways HAD would manipulate the timbre of an amp. I would assume it was the timbre that HAD was chasing after as you don't hear comments from people playing or owning authentic 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen amps that they are noisy.
I am interested to hear what this one will sound like...
