Folks,
Let me state up front that I am a total newbie, so please forgive my ignorance. That being said, after I built a nice 5F1, I built a pair of 5E3's-a standard circuit, and the Tweedle Dee Deluxe hosted right here on the AmpGarage.
It sounds real good with a GZ34 and 2 5881 Tung-Sols (I used the proper transformers). I want to try the Rob Robinette 3 way negative feedback switch. I am confused because of the split cathode bypass caps/resistors. I wired the switch with the cap/resistor the goes to pin 3, but did not hear any differences at all. What am I doing wrong?
Also, I would like to separate the two volume controls (no interactivity), but following a scheme on Rob Robinette's page led to a big mess.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Slim

Re: Questions about modding a Tweedle Dee Deluxe
Hey Slim,
Congrats on your builds, this is the right place to get some help although the forum is slow these days.
Let's try and sort your issues.
First the three way neg feedback: the three positions provide very distinct sounds. But it also depends on your speaker. First I would recommend to try to listen through the 3 settings with a different speaker and enough volume (above talking level); some speakers offer more sound frequencies and different peaks, so what is very subtle on one speaker may be obvious on others.
Do you hear changes?
One position is quiet and less distorted (neg feedback on),
The other 2 options provide
- more distortion,
- more distortion and more volume (more mids);
Now let's review the wiring:
It should be wired exactly like this: Does your output transformer provides multiple taps (4,8 and 16 ohms)?
Did you use the proper resistor with the right output?
This should be a good start to see if something is wrong in your wiring, pictures could help too;
Cheers,
F.
