How many Dumbles does John Mayer have?

Post by brucedrennen »

JEEZ, the man owns more Dumbles than anyone I know. Here's from last nights Grammy's: It's obviously a Steel String Slinger next a Sterling Sig and a his sig TR.

Oddly enough, John Mayer bought a Dumble from a friend of the luthier where I teach. I guess the guy owned two and sold them when they started to skyrocket in value.

FWIW, the guy at Overland Express has quite a collection, but they don't seem to be very modern examples. He has a nice 100W ODS for sale right now.

Random question - anyone ever checked out the Dumbles at Overland Express? That place is about two hours from me.

I know that he has at least two ODS. Apparently he has a SSS too.

Overland park , KS- He doesn't have a storefront, nor does he allow you to play the amps before you buy. Of course all sales are final :D

He's actually a really nice guy and will give you his honest opinion on stuff, He talked me out of buying a XXX-XXXX many moons ago. If I had $40K amps at my house I'd be reluctant to have a bunch of lookie-loo's trapsing through my living room as well!

He WAS a fantastic pop singer/songwriter, his first Major release "Room for squares" is some of the coolest music I've heard in a long time, then he decided to fancy himself a bluesman (along with taking himself VERY seriously) and IMHO it's been all downhill. He is a great singer, and when he's not trying to be SRV he is a Fantastic picker. HIS licks are interesting, and generally very original, problem is all he's played last couple times I've seen him are the Wish I Was from Austin SRV licks.

That's just my opinion of course, I would be VERY pleased if he'd do another Pop album.

My take exactly! Cool singer - great songwriter. I don't get the direction he's in. The other stuff was so refreshing and DIFFERENT. I think he's sold his wardrobe to afford all those Dumbles.......... *edit. removed skanky picture of Borat thong wearing rock star.

I was just being a smart aleck about JM's "...Wish I Was from Austin SRV licks" attitude.

Gee thanks for the pic...Ugh!

Sorry guys, I think Continuun is his best yet. It had great songs & wasn't SRV at all to me. Waiting for the World to Change was way more Marvin Gaye than SRV. Good Love is on the Way, Gravity, and Vultures are all great in my book. I think he is young & growing and will be with us a long time.

I've got three of his CD's, and as a semi-singer-songwriter-producer I have to say that I've been impressed with how much restraint he shows on his recordings. The guitar playing seems to be there to serve the song, rather than vice versa like you might expect from someone with good chops like his.

As for taking himself too seriously, I don't mind hearing political/social commentary in a song...I think it's good use of the medium. It's something I strive for, so it drives me a little nuts that my most requested song ends up being one I wrote on a bet in less than 10 minutes called "Tofurkey." C'est la vie.

For My dollar I'd much rather hear "Why Georgia Why" than him preach about sitting Idly by and waiting for the world to change- If you are not actively making a difference then you are part of the problem, there is amazing power in a single voice, If you are singing to make a difference like John Lennon, or Bob Dylan that's very different than complaining.

Don't get me wrong, I really do like John Mayer, I own Room for squares, try, and continum, I just thought that Room for squares was better listening.
