D'Lite Blue Monkey?

Post by Mark »

Has anyone built the Blue Monkey kit?

It look like a really interesting amp with a lot of options.

It sounds like my kind of D style amp. I'd be curious to hear more about it.
Yours Sincerely

I'm pretty sure nobody has built a "kit" yet since Moss just started offering it. AFAIK, the blue monkey is based on the bluesmaster circuit. If the kit is anything like the blue monkeys I've built for Moss, they'll be the bluesmaster circuit with a few mods (PAB padding, PAB hi-cut, foot-switchable mid boost, etc.). I typically build them with reverb but I don't know if that will be a kit option.

As for the tone, I think it's been pretty well described in a few threads as "Fender cleans, Marshall OD" but as you know, it's hard to describe tone. I wish I could tell you more, but I've found that every player who's tried one sounds different. Some people respond really well to the amp and others prefer a more traditional Dumble tone. I guess you'll just have to build one and find out for yourself.

Hi Mark.
I don't think anyone has built one yet, because I think I ordered the first kit, and I haven't gotten it yet. Come on Fedex truck.

Mine is supposed to be a 44 watt version - 40 w 4*6V6 20w 2*6V6, HRM, footswitching, and reverb. I got the mod kit with it, just for good measure.

I'm REALLY looking forward to this one.

Are the reverb controls on the back of the amp? How is the reverb set up? Is it the reverb send amp, reverb return amp, and mix circuit, where the reverb volume is coupled with the od level, like in the odsr, or uncoupled like in the old odr's , or is it just standard old fender?
Thanks for any info.

Norm

Thanks for the reply, it sounds like a really good thing!

Bob

I'd really like to know more about the amp when you get the kit. You have to post up pictures of your build as you progress through it. I'm very curious.

I can't be 100% but all the Brownnote reverb ckt's I've seen take the send from just before the PI in. The mixer is simple resistor.

Hi.
The reverb knob is on the back.
I don't know about the setup.
There are pictures of a completed amp on the brownnote forum.
Maybe you could let me know...

That is an enormous output transformer!

That looks like a pretty sweet amp. I dare say Norm was working overtime on that baby!

I can't take any credit for this one...that's Moss all the way. :)

This is a 100 watt version that Moss just finished. With any luck, I'll get over there today to give it a test drive.

Bob is correct, the OD is driven from the PI with a simple voltage divider network as a mixer.

Thanks Bob, that's right.

Slightly off topic, but I had a chance to play through Moss's Blue Monkey 88 Reverb yesterday and A/B it with my 44 watt version. It sounds very similar to my BM 44 Reverb, but the bottom end holds together much better at higher volume. Obviously, the 88 also had a lot more clean headroom.

Both amps were built with stiffer filtering and use chokes. Both had a cool percussive quality when chugging out the low notes. They also have this "elastic" quality to the notes that's hard to describe but very cool, IMHO.

Anyway, not much of a report, but it's the best I can do without clips. To recap, if you need headroom, the Blue Monkey 88 is the way to go.
