Wiring Pots ?

Post by mick »

Hi all
I’m playing around with a SE thing and trying out different EQ styles and wondering why there not working so well only to discover there not wired correctly, could someone please explain to me why on schematics a bass pot for example is shown with the wiper connected to one or the other lugs of the pot when in reality it’s not supposed to be ? and why when there is a connection you get a massive bass boost ?.

Thanks
Mick

Ps. please keep it simple because I am... very

In many tone stacks, the bass pot is being used as a variable resistor. It controls how much of the bass signal is shunted to ground. You can wire the wiper to the clockwise end of the pot, or leave that terminal open. It makes no difference electrically. But if you wire the wiper to the other end, you have shorted the pot and it is as if the pot isn't there at all. So wiring it correctly gives you a bass boost (when the bass pot is turned up). And wiring it incorrectly makes the bass go away.

Thanks firestorm, that I understood, it turns out my eyes as well as my head aren't working so well, I forgot I had put a dumble-ish stack in there, I had a switch from a previous stack connecting pin 1 to the wiper or not, of coarse there's a cap on the bass pot that I had forgotten was there, so I was looking for answers for a problem that didn’t exist.
