Transformer question

Post by mattjaco1 »

Just recently picked up a power transformer for a vox/trainwreck type build. The transformer has 2 heater taps, 6.3v and 12.6v. Was wandering what would be the best way to use these heater taps. I thought about using the 6.3v tap for the power tubes, and running the preamp tubes off the 12.6v tap. Would using the 6.3V tap for power tubes with the heaters in parallel and the 12.6V tap for preamp tubes with the heaters in series be the best way to do this?

Unless you bought a different one than the PDF shows, that one has two 6.3V @ 4A each. You probably only need one of those. You can parallel them for 8A or maybe use one winding for the power tubes and the other for the preamp tubes. Or you can just leave one 6.3V winding unused!

To get the full power of that PT, wire the two primaries in parallel if USA. For EU you need to run them in series.

For the HT secondary connect the middle white+yellow to form a center tap. If you don't want a CT, then just tie them together with a WU splice and cover with heat shrink.

Yes i thought i was getting (2) 6.3 taps, I even specified in the order to make sure it came with (2) 6.3v taps!! I have used their transformers in 2 previous builds, and both of them came with 2 6.3v taps!! Do you think the 6.3v tap by itself will work? I know they are rated for 4 amps. The build is a Mazerati GT type build (4 el84, 2 12ax7), with Solid State rectification.
