transformer makes rattling noise at start up?

Post by jamme61 »

when I first power my amp up (still on standby) the transformer makes a rattling noise. I shut it off turn it back on (still on standby) and the noise is gone? Is it about to fail? Its a 2007 bogner ecstacy 101b. Thanks for any info

A rattling noise?

Not just hum?

Not sure I have ever heard of that.

Have you tried lightly tapping the tubes to see if it is tube related?

1) Have you checked all mechanical connections to make sure they're nice and tight, and there's nothing that could be rattling near the transformer?
2) Does the transformer have some sort of metal case around the core that could be vibrating, maybe due to temporary high current draw to heat the cold tube filaments manifesting itself as physical movement which dies down when the tubes warm up and the load stabilizes? Transformer vibration isn't exactly unheard of, especially if they're undersized for the load.

Try tightening the clamp bolts on the transformer, too.

I wouldn't think it was a sign of imminent failure...

The amp sounds and plays fine. I have checked everything. I have tightened all the bolts on the housing of the transformer. It does make the same noise very briefly when I put it full on (take it off standby) must be no big deal thanks for the time on this
