What to build next?

Post by fusionbear »

I don't have a lot of money right now, but I have enough to build one amp. Not sure what to build????

Here is a list of some parts I have sitting around:

1. Heybeor PT for JTM 45/100 (the BIG ONE!) 560 B+

2. 100 Watt Classictone Marshall Style OT

3. 50 Watt Classictone Marshall Style OT

4. Allen Amps/Classictone Deluxe Reverb OT

Open to ideas?

I was thinking of a Voxy influenced build with a push/pull pair of 6V6's power amp. Just a two knob amp: Volume and Cut.... But I am open...

What say ye???

Well, seeing as you already have the transformers for it, why not a 100w Marshall-ish amp like a Super Lead or 2204?

Because he's built no fewer than a bajillion of those. :)

I say, it's time to build a 100 watt headphone amp.

Or a 100 watt RF cable booster relay thing, so we can get good reception in Chico from your borrowed cable service in central valley area.

Or a plexi style foot warmer. Did you see the 1000 watt resistor I got for testing the QSC power amps?!?

You have a couple OT , but just one large 100W class PT, so 6V6 are sort of out of the picture.

If tired of building killer but simple Marshalls, get into something more complex and build a Soldano .

Or the Soldano designed Yamaha T100 .

Some would suggest a MBDR clone, personally I find it needlessly complex (lots of "modes"and options) without many good sounds, so those little switches do not provide a real advantage.

Soldanos are a much straighter concept and onstage or in a complex mix cut like a knife through butter.

1. Heybeor PT for JTM 45/100 (the BIG ONE!) 560 B+
2. 100 Watt Classictone Marshall Style OT

You can build a 2xKT88 dual channel hi-gain amp like a Soldano as JMF said, or a VHT.

I just build a Dr Z Mazerati GT 38 clone. 4 EL-84's, and comes stock with a volume and cut control in the PA side.

I ended up adding a low-load bass and treble control, but it is a simple, rocking amp. Glorious amounts of gain, and cleans up with your guitar volume knob.

Simple, yet rocking and stupid loud.

I think a Soldano influenced SLO build with 2 KT88's might be the ticket...

I will build the Lead side only...

The 100 Watt OT I have is too low though. It s 1.7K Primary impedance. I do have enough dough to buy another OT. I could buy the matching JTM 45/100 OT which is 4k primary impedance... That would be good for two KT88's

This sounds like fun...

Wel, if you have 4, 8 and 16 ohm taps, and you don't need the 4 ohm tap on your new amp, just use the 4 ohm tap as 8 and the 8 one as 16.

A Rocket bike would be cool.

Or,

Wire the PT with a bridge rectifier and use the center tap for ground to get about 280 volts B+. Then, use the 1.7K OT and use an octet of 6V6 or EL84.
What?

Good on Jana... I wonder what 16 6K6s would sound like... I have a box full.

Alternatively, if you've got any, a pair of BIG sweep tubes (6LF6, 6LW6, 6KG6, 6LR6, and their like) will make 100+ watts with a 2k-ish a-a load and around 150V on the screens and a B+ of ~600V. Just some food for thought.
