Ive got access to TUBES

Post by stretch2011 »

I found a place whose name will not be spoken :P that has a "TUBE ROOM". It is problable 12x12 room completely filled with shit tons of every tube imaginable EXCEPT the ones used all the time. 12ax7's 6v6's, 6l6's, el34's etc. I know for instance they have boxes of 5 pin peanut tubes. If you would like me look for any specific tubes when Im in there next I will.

There are some off-the-beaten path tubes that are nearly 100% equivalent to many that we use with a different pin out. Examples are 6GK6 (EL84) and 6CM6 (noval 6V6). if you find any of these, take all you can find.

+1 for the 1629 "Magic Eye" tube. JAN are preferred. I'll buy a pair if you can find a couple NOS and offer them for a reasonable price. I want a backup or two for my Eico 950. :)

Nixie tubes are the ones that have numbers inside them. Like so:

TV sweep tubes are my tubes of choice. A short list would be...
6BQ6
6BG6
6DQ6
6LQ6
6LR6
6LF6
6LW6
6CM5
6MH6
6LX6
6DQ5
6KN6
6KD6
6KG6
6JE6
6JS6
6GB5
13E1
...And all the various odd filament voltage variants of the above tubes. Or anything that looks like them. There are too many types to list!

Also of interest are several types of various TV pentodes and triode/pentodes. Some numbers to look for are:
6EJ7/EF184
6GH8
6KE8
6CM8
6LU8
EF80
6U8
6BL8
6BM8
6X8
6LX8
...And many more I can't think of right now. These also come in a variety of filament voltages. The point is that there are likely tons of useful tubes there, even if they're not of the common audio amplifier variety. It just takes a little ingenuity and experimentation to make a decent audio amp out of them, and they're mostly dirt cheap and plentiful since nobody uses them.

Magic Eye tubes are pretty cool though. I've always liked how Trace Elliot used one as a power indicator on their V6/V8 bass amps and have wanted to do something similar for awhile. Perhaps when my 150W monster finally gets beyond the planning/parts gathering stage...

6bq6 can be used as power tubes (was used in some transmitter modulator)

6dq6 also, it was used in some australian guitar amp like the Playmaster

the 6kg6 were used in the Traynor YBA-3A Custom Special guitar amp

invertiguy: im pretty sure they have some of those tubes. They have shit tones of tubes that start with 6. They also have tubes that start with 1,7,9,12, etc. 7 pin 8 pin 9 pin all kinds of stuff. even some tubes that are the size of my arm for oscilloscopes I guess

6BQ6 seems really familiar.

The ones I'm most interested in start with IN (ex. IN-14). Don't go out of your way, or anything.
