Wow! this thread is gold!

I already read about it over diystompboxes, but here are a lot more pictures!

nice soundsamples! And comparison!

Your schematic is also nice, and with voltage readings, something that helps new guys like me.

And I need to say, that this build was one of my inspirations to do this:

Still needs a speaker and a small radio cab to be complete.

And that speaker you're using is gorgeous, it kept my attention for the first time.
I need to find one of those, it looks awesome!
You have any idea how it compares to an old jensen alnico? There are some 4" over ebay sometimes.

Once again, amazing build!

Thanks Thomas_H,

What is your small "Paisley Box" amp about ?
Is is a 220-240VAC standalone unit ?
The tube seems not to be an ECL86/6GW8, but... ?
Can you tell us more ?

I tried one of those 4" JENSEN :

[img:640:480]http://img15.hostingpics.net/pics/65976 ... ll2red.jpg[/img]

But it couldn't compare with the 5" OAKTRON 5D8S (power handling, tone, volume) so I discarded it.

In my opinion, you would better choose a 5" speaker, not less in diameter, except if you test a good one, of course. That nice small Jensen was not, unfortunately.

Be careful not to choose midrange speakers : these are unable to stand the basses and have only a piercing tone. Have a look to vintage wide-band automotive speakers, like the OAKTRON 5D8S is. You can find them in many brands : Jensen, Carbonneau, Utah, Oxford...

A+!
If it works, don't fix it...

Thanks a lot!

I was going to spend a lot on one of those jensen.
I will definetely look for old automotive speakers now.

As about the small amplifier, it uses a PCL84, like the ECL86 it has a triode and a pentode, but with lower plate current, and different heater voltage.

With a lower plate current it was possible to use a switched-mode power supply for the high voltage, which multiplies the 12V wallwart voltage to 225V. I opened a thread some time ago with more pictures and schematics>http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=
It all works with a small 12V 1A wallwart.

My intention is to build a small wooden cab with one 4" or 5" speaker to make it look like an old tube radio.

Thanks again for your help with the speaker!

Fine, Thomas !
It all works with a small 12V 1A wallwart.
Aha ! So it is NOT a standalone amplifier

I will go to your thread for more information, then.

Thanks !
