why no resonance knob in clean amps?

Post by idnotbe »

i just wonder why there is no resonance knob in clean amps?
or why no nfb control (for all the frequency range to adjust the overall NFB level for the presence and the resonance knob) in clean amps?

i guess there is the need for the low end thumb in high gain amps which have the resonance or nfb control.
but it does not mean they are nothing in clean amps.

why?
does anyone have experimented the resonance or the nfb control knob in clean amps?

Aren’t presence controls a NFB control?

I've only added the NFB defeat in my 6L6 champ. So it is like switching between presence and resonance bot at 0 and both at 10. Always loved the tone more without the NFB, but the difference is really subtle on a champ. Probably that's why.

i mean the NFB control for all frequency to increase or decrease the overall amount of NFB.

My opinion is that a Presence control is probably the most practical single control out of the typical LTP NFB controls (Presence, Resonance and overall Feedback) for a clean amp. A Resonance control in a clean amp sometimes sounds too similar to a Bass control in the tone stack. Also the Feedback control in a clean amp can have similar sonic effects that a Presence control has and there is a lot of overlap depending on which value Presence cap is used. Same applies for the value of the Resonance cap, which I try to voice lower than the bass control to make sure they don't occupy similar frequencies. This is easier to hear in an amp with more preamp gain because notes will sustain longer.

Personally, I dig a 50 watt or 100 watt power amp that has a very small preset Resonance network and then two separate controls for Feedback and Presence. With a robust power amp I find that way I can tweak the power amp to be pretty much how I'd like it to be with any preamp; particularly a preamp from another amp.

Hope that helps.

I lean more for a treble cut control then presence control especially for clean and semi clean circuits.

There is a PDF of a power amp design I've been using for a few months now on the first page. Really enjoying this spec.
