2204 build, questions about capacitors and resistors

Post by Governator »

Hi, I’m putting together a parts list for a 2204 build (not my first build), and have a question regarding which coupling and silver mica caps to use:
- Sozo next gen vs Synergy royal mustard?
- Sozo 1000v silver mica vs other silver mica caps?
- Nos Cc resistors in certain positions vs all carbon film?
- JJ power and preamp tubes any good in these?

Thanks.

- Sozo next gen vs Synergy royal mustard? [DOESN'T MATTER REALLY]
- Sozo 1000v silver mica vs other silver mica caps? [CERAMIC?]
- Nos Cc resistors in certain positions vs all carbon film? [CF]
- JJ power and preamp tubes any good in these? (NOT FOR ME PERSONALLY NO]

Thanks.

JJ preamp tubes are nice , free to use them (NOS tungsram ECC83 othervise, not expensive and excellent, the best vintage tube is by far Philips ECC83)
for output JJ is harsh, you need to risk with something else
sozo for coupling caps.. some nice output transformer too,

use whatever film caps you'd like for coupling (i use the yellow axial ones from antique electronic supply as they work perfectly fine blocking dc from the preamp tube plates and aren't crazy expensive like other fussier caps)
i agree with ceramic instead of silver mica for pF values
carbon film resistors except for the input grid and grid stoppers where metal film will be quieter. metal oxide or ceramic for power supply/power tube screens
someone around here dropped some philosophy that i've adopted as my own: if you can get an amp sounding good with jj tubes it'll sound good with just about anything

Its all personal preference but i didnt like silver micas in the amp i made, kind of sounded too smooth in a way. I changed them out to ceramic which had a more aggressive top end to my ears. Not that their any better than other caps but i ended up using synergy caps for most coupling and bypass caps. I did use some other brand caps that are on a switch in parallel with the synergys though. They are a solen fast cap (cathode bypass) and a mojotone pio vitamin t (coupling cap). Resistors i used were the kiwame carbon films and vishay dale metal films. Ohmite wirewound on the power tube screens. I got most of these parts from valvestorm, partsconnexion, and mojotone. I really like valvestorm for stuff, they have most of what you need to make an amp.

Thanks for the replies, when you say all pF values as ceramic - on the diagram I have, the only ceramic caps in pF values are the bright cap and 2204 gain pot 1000pF, all other 47pF and 500pF are listed as silver mica. Are you saying it is better to have all of these as ceramic?

I would build it like the schematic first then try ceramics in the silver mica spots later to see if you like them more.
