I avoided using vactrols with my build... but I also designed my own PCB's with relays.

I like to design things so that parts are easily available and not obsolete, and have a long term supply chain if that makes sense. even looking at our faithful impedance selector that is somewhat of a hard commodity to come by these days is a good example
