potentiometer adjustable cold clipping?

Post by pjd3 »

Just curious if anyone has tried an adjustable cold clipper cathode resistance using a potentiometer.

Looking from a distance at the voltage and current expectations down there, is there any apparent reason that it would be problematic?

Thanks,

Just a little noise when you adjust it.

You might want to have a resistor in series with the pot to make sure there is a minimum amount of resistance between the cathode and ground.

That's good to hear, thanks for the tip.

I bet that is why you only see variable cathode resistor in the form of a switch, like the Structure switch.

And sure, a minimum value resistor. Maybe something like a 1.5K in series with a 25K Pot. May have to try that one day,.

Thank you!

I use it as a tail on a favored R/C.

You will be happy with many choices. I use 25k pot on center biased limiting or higher R.

Feel free to fully bypass adjustable stage.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

But T, I can't disregard.

I must clip with my cathode....,,.Kiddin.

LOL, yeah I wrote like 2 paragraphs about an adjustable cathode "Fat circuit" then looked up and saw cold clipping on the title
Guess my coffee hadn't kicked in yet
Carry on!

Well ya know what T ?

Your efforts shall not be in vein. I would surely be interested in what your severely maligned thesis on that would be anyways.

Might be an inspiration for another kind of mod one day.

Thanks,

Phil D.

Old post, I know... but I am working with a cold clipper on a Bogen conversion and liking 10k a lot at V3b. This is 110 Bogen. So I am curious if you have implemented the pot idea? 27k was blah but it seems that between 6k and 15k there is a lot of useful territory.
