EVH 5150 III 6L6 Supersonic mod info please

Post by Emetal »

I got new EVH 5150 III 6L6 50W amp and I am not quite happy with the sound, it's harsh and has a V shaped EQ character. I have seen mod on the internet called SuperSonic mod and clips are awesome, adds mids and cuts through the mix, sounds perfect. It says it has an added pot for dialing "high order harmonics"

Does anybody please know how the mod is done? I was thinking maybe it's a pot added in series with cathode resistor but that would influence only one channel, I think the mod on the net works for both Channel 2 (blue) and Channel 3 (red) with one pot. Any info on this mod would be highly appreciated. I live in Serbia and have no other way but doing this myself.

No idea about the mod. But I've been really happy playing my 5150 IIImk2 6L6 amp in my Van Halen tribute. I use a 2x12 cab loaded with one Vintage30 and one G12K-85, both mic'd. Really great tone.

I’d put 470p across the plate resistor of the second gain stage. Then you can further trim highs by using a presence pot like the Mesa Dual Rectifier does, on the EQ.

I have since solved the problem, I bought 4 Greenbacks as recommended by manufacturer (EVH speakers are Greenbacks in essence, just deferent sticker) and I swapped the EMG 81 for EMG 85 in the BIRDGE. Holy shit what a massive sound. So the point is if you have treble high amp, adjust the other links in the chain the opposite way.
