For two days I've been experiencing way too many errors. Anyone else?

This is a server issue. It happens when there are approx. 180 users on the forum. A short while ago, the user count dropped down below 100 and everything was working normally. Now the user count is back up around 200 and the errors are back. Hopefully Phil can fix it if he ever comes around. Maybe someone could send him an email.

Hopefully I can get this message posted.

I do believe this is a DoS attack. Google "DoS attack" if you don't know what that is.

I wonder who is behind it?

Probably one of the solid state forums...

Strange that we were able to have over 1000 users on line in the past (2020) and now it can't handle a fraction of that.

Cheers

May not be a DoS attack. Maybe the server has just degraded to the point that it can only handle less than 150 users at a time. Maybe some pissed off user is just sitting behind a keyboard and punching refresh as fast as he can. But the users online stats show less than 100 users when it's working, and user count is always above 180 when it's not working. Definitely an adminstrator issue.

PS... 121 users online while I did this reply.

Hello --

That message is certainly a function of load limiting at the server. Nothing anyone can do in the browser except go off and wait for another time, and hope then it's been less loaded.

I see less than 20 active users currently. Two listed are search bots -- Google & Bing. Doubtful those are the cause, though an automated crawl can be intensive. No need to manually sit and bang on the site as putting a crude bot to work is child's play. Somewhat skeptical this site has ever had over a thousand active users simultaneously.

Perhaps Phil can be persuaded to stop in and look at any logging that would begin to explain.

Best .. Ian

the "number of users on line" is a contrived number and it can be misleading. On phpBB the administrator gets to decide the span of time over which the number of users is counted. If the sampling interval is set to a long time then the result will be a large number of simultaneous users online; if the sampling interval is set to a short time then the result will be a small number of simultaneous users online. The number is actually meaningless, though some admins like to use a long interval so the board looks like it has a reasonable amount of traffic.

Sorry just found this while cleaning up a user. I would think this is more likely a problem with the hosting provider, they're pretty horrible. I doubt sluckey is suddenly posting more than he ever has in the past :) I honestly don't have a ton of time to look into logs etc. I try to do the bare minimum to check my email for user issues etc and that's about it anymore.
