Hiwatt Lead L50R Buzz

Post by psychic fuzz »

Hey yall

Picked up this Hiwatt Lead 50r from GC that I bought online. It arrived with some issues unfortunately. There is a buzz. It does go away if I turn Master down, other pots dont effect it.

I did notice if I poke the grey cable shield with all the clip-in wires, it does effect buzz. Doesn't stop buzz, but it adds and sometimes replaces with a different sounding a hum.

Another issue is what appears to be some sort of repair/mod near the fuses which I'll need to address. Since theres no schematic avail not sure if this is wired properly. Will def need to replace that one taped together wire :x

FWIW GC gave me $100 back from what I paid, so there's that. The logical part of my brain says return, but the collector/hoarder amp nerd part is saying save it and fix it.

Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Does the bottom of the cabinet have a metal shield plate that the chassis captures when it’s screwed down,
Or at least foil glued to the the bottom?

Just left the house I can't remember sorry, but was having the same issue with the chassis in the combo cab

Wouldn't hurt to check the filter power supply caps. The amp is likely 30 years old at this point.
