Cleaning Pots..

Post by FunkyE9th »

I've been using the ones they have at Radio Shack and was wondering if DeoxIT is a better choice. Any opinions?

I have been using the Radioshack stuff with lubrication for Pots. They work great for Wah's and expression pedals. Amps pots too.

I have the plain cleaner too for tubes and jacks.

From what I was told by my father (30 year electronics/avionics tech) that it is all about the same stuff. There is just different brands. He did say there was some bees knees stuff in the avionics industry but its stupid expensive.

YMMV

I work in the avionics industry as well as a Sales Director.... I personally use Caig Deoxdit regular and Gold on my personal work bench...

I asked the guys in the shop what they use-

Techspray HFE Light Duty Contact Cleaner

Don't know much about it, but there's at least one industry input..

I use a generic brand made by caig, can't remember what's it called but the same as DeoxIT. Works perfectly.

Techspray HFE is the stuff my father uses all the time. There's probably 50 cans of stuff in his basement. Cans have to be thrown away at my fathers work because they are too old.

Thanks all. I'll stick with the Radio Shack stuff for now, but will probably try deoxit later.

I ran a MI repair shop for years. I found the Caig De-Oxit to be a miracle worker for old pots. It's not cheap, but i f you learn how to apply it, a single can will last for a year or two.

I have had tuner cleaners destroy pots in the distant past, ie " BLueShower" and a few from Radio Shack. I only use Caig Laboratory products now, and have never had any problems.

I used to be an Audio Video electronics repair technician.

The Chemtronics Tuner Renu was for tuners...the old kind before remote controls that is. The ones with the clunky dials. We used that for multi-pole switches, not pots.

For pots the DeOxit. It's been awhile now, but if I remember correctly...red, green and blue stuff. Red last because it has the lube in it. The others to clean first.

Never liked blueshower or any of that radio shack junk, horrible stuff imho.
The chemtronics stuff works for a lot of things, not just tuner switches. It ain't cheap, but goes a long way for the $

The Radio Shack Tuner Cleaner I have shoots out at 50,000 MPH. Makes a mess if you don't protect the area well. The Craig Deoxit is not as bad.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

I use the old turn the pot to one end then to the other, then do that 100 times. If that don't work spray some wd40 in it and do it again.
