VHT special six ultra push/pull volume pot replacement

Post by DSones »

I have two VHT Special Six Ultra amps. In one amp the push/pull volume pot is shorting so I need to replace the pot. The pot is not like a standard DPDT pot. Do you know what kind of push/pull volume pot I need. When the switch is in the push position B, C, E, F all have continuity with each other. In the pull position A, D, B, E all have continuity. Also lugs C and F are not connected too any thing. This is very different from the push/pull switches I’m use to (like the picture). What am I missing?

If you simply add your own jumper from B to E, then in one position, BECF are all shorted together, and other position ADBE are shorted together, just as you wish. Am I missing something?

Just curious

When you performed the test, did you disconnected completely the PP Pot from the circuit ?

The pot itself is shorting or the switch section?

Seems like switch is working from the description.

When you say the pot is “shorting” do you mean it is crackling and cutting out, or did you find it going to zero ohms?

It can be hard to find pots with switches and what not that fit your circuit board. There’s always the manufacturer of the amp who may have parts in stock.

Next would be identifying who made the pot and look up the data sheet from whatever markings are on it.

Further down the rabbit hole is fixing the pot itself. Some times this is the only way. If you can find the manufacturer and what pot family it is by part number, you might find a non-switched pot and transplant the resistance wafer and contacts to this body with the switch. Or maybe assemble the switch onto a new pot body.

I’ve had to do such shenanigans over the years many times.

I can jumper B to E to connect the two sides but I don't know what is grounded and what isn't. The broken/missing pcb that sits on the top of the push/pull volume pot can't be used anymore. It not only jumpers the two sides of the switch but also does something with ground. I've attached a file showing what I found in another vht ultra special 6 before I sold it. I can't figure out what needs to be grounded. In the schematic it says push= shunt (clean) and pull= NC (boost).
