Ilitch noise cancelling system opinions?

Post by Mark »

Hi

I did post this elsewhere but got no replies, so I thought I would try my luck here.

I was wondering if any of you have fitted it to Strat and what results did you get from the system?

It seems like a great alternative to noise cancelling pickups.

What are your experiences and thoughts on the matter?
Yours Sincerely

I built my tele with traditional lollar single coil pickups, which I love. But, the hum was really getting to me. So I came across the Ilitch system, and decided to install an Ilitch coil in my tele using the coil he mounts into a tele pickguard. I absolutely love it. works perfectly. In fact, in our practice space, we have the noisiest dimmers and it cancels the hum better than my buddy's les paul.
The only word of caution is that with really small cavity in a standard tele, there isn't much room at all for the extra wiring and trimmer board. Its easy to break wire connection and If you have copper shielding watch for something shorting out. Particularly, if you have to use a 3 way "super switch" because of RWRP pickups.
All that being said. Absolutely worth the money.

I’m not sure my one (dummy coil in the control cavity) would work with the inside of guitar shielded. I would have went for a Strat pickguard except he only does 11 hole guards and my guitar has an 8 hole guard.

How did you set up the pots for your Tele?

What did you use as a source of noise and hum?

Thanks for your advice and assistance.
Yours Sincerely

I am kind at my wits end with single coil hum as well. I love the sounds, but the hum is becoming a dealbreaker for me. I am wondering if the Ilitch Backplate works. I really like the dummy coil humcanceling system found in the Tyler guitars, but that arrangement requires a much larger pickup cavity route to install. I have also been looking at stacked, humbucking single coils from Dimarzio.

Kinman Pickups are the answer to Strat, Tele, P90 and other humming pickups.
Great sounding Humbuckers too.
I've been using them for years and I have fitted them for some of my customers.
They all love them.

Hello --

On a quick close read the Ilitch patent seems to provide clear description of the principles and elements required to make one :: https://patents.google.com/patent/US7259318B2/en. Looks fairly straightforward if you're able to develop solid understanding. It's expired.

If I clear down my stack of stalled projects it'd be something to try.

FWIW ..

Thanks for the tip on Kinman's stuff. He's got a lot of good information on his site as well.

I'm happy with my Kinman Strat and P90 replacement pickups.
They've gone expensive though, and so many different models!

But if you're happy with the tone of the single coil pickups already fitted (as I am with my 80s Tokai), then the Illitch system may be worth considering, especially if it can be DIYed.

I have used Kinman pickups before and they are very quiet. The guitar was also shielded and it was a lot quieter than humbucking pickups.

I stopped using the Kinman’s as I had the original pickups in my guitar rewound to stock specs and I really liked the timbre it produced. I think Kinman makes a set which replicates the 60’s pickups, I thought I would stick with the original pickups and use the Ilitch system.

The designs have been tweaked a couple of times since I got mine +15 years ago, but the Blues set looks pretty much what I settled on.
I originally started with the straight AVN62 vintage set, but wanted a bit more oomph from the bridge, so changed it to an SCN.

Getting a tone control on the bridge pickup is key for me, as is a super switch which I use to disconnect the bridge tone control in position 4, when bridge + middle are selected.

The tone control requires a bit of experimention to get the cap value and pot taper to my taste.
