Deluxe volume voodoo

Post by angelodp »

Well, my new amp sounds great but the volume knobs are pretty strange. And the Normal Volume rolls of highs at the very end of travel at 12?? So what is the idea behind the volume functions on this type of amp ( 5E3 ). My bro John tells me that my build sounds pretty close to a stock Deluxe, so I know the build is good. But for the life of me the volume functions on this amp are strange. Can some of the more experienced builders weigh in on what this design was intended to do.

Someone may correct me if I'm wrong but I think the two volume controls are interactive with each other on those.

There are some cool mods you can do to that circuit like adding negative feedback and adding a gain boost on V1 by adding another cathode cap on a switch.

Don't let that smoke out!

Yes, you are indeed spot on mate.
Those controls are odd.
And the tone control has a very large effect on the volume.
Vol #2 can act like a tone control when plugged into #1.
Same on the opposite.

Bridge the two channels for even more fun!
Then it makes it easier to get a nice grind without much volume.

Even with the controls as they are, that kind of tone control and volume
set up can be nicely interactive. Play with it more before you tweak it.

You can make it "normal" by adding a few parts. I think there are kits for that. But many say they like the interactive stock setup.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

Hello all...

The way that the volume controls on a 5E3 are normal. They do not work like a voltage divider as in BF and countless others amps. It actually works by loading down the signal. Using that fact to your advantage is the key. Try varying the position of the controls and explore this interaction. Even jumper the channels together for almost limless tonal options.

Plug into the INST. channel, crank the MIC channel, then try the INST. channel at about 10 for a great clean tone (or variations in between.) Then try the opposite for a more driven tone. Get an AB box and you got two distinct tones in one amp.

Changing the way the volume controls function would perhaps change the essence of what makes a Deluxe a "Deluxe."

Just my humble opinion. Heck being that we are modders, just leave the Deluxe as it is and build another amp that has the properties you are looking for. That's the fun part.

Yo, mando.
Dead on!

Since I wasn't "used to it", I wanted to change it...
I learned about what it does, and it is the mojo of the 5E3.

Only mod I do is a channel jump switch to avoid stringing cables.
Other than that-life is grand.
And loud!

Thanks for the welcome...Howdy Tubeswell...great to see you here. Hi Cygnus...great to see you here too.

Now just work that volume control on the guitar and your all set. And...maybe slap a nice reverb in front and have a ball.

Enjoy...I do mine!

You got to try a tweed tremolux (5G9 - '58 model - fixed bias with an LTP inverter and bias-vary trem) - awesome hypnotic trem
