Sounds like too much treble, which you can expect if you put the mic directly on axis. Try moving the mic horizontally to the left or right, so it's pointing at the junction of the dust cap and the cone.

I use a SM57 mic into a cheap behringer desk, thence into my computer's external mic input. Apart from the mic, you oughta be able to score a behringer desk for $300 or less.
