Pics (what are those 2 metal "round" things" ? Are they inductors for the fx loop?

Not real sure but they could be relays or cap cans.

It would help if you set the image size bigger in Photobucket.
You currently have it set at 320x240.

Try 800x600 but I think you will have to upload the pictures again to get the new image size.

Tonemasters lead dress varies from amp to amp. Haven't seen two 100% identical. Check if power tubes' grid stopper resistors are mounted directly on tube sockets or on the component board.
If they are board mounted move them to tube sockets. Connect them to back to board with shielded wires, ground the shields at power tubes' cathode ground connections. Use one shielded wire per tube.

Probably the best example of lead dress' importance in critical parts of an amp's circuit.
You can also replace grid stoppers with something in the 10-33kOhm range.

Influence of resistor/capacitor brands is in comparison to this simple/basic mod like adding/removing 3 grains of salt from a teaspoonful when cooking a pot of pasta.

For more headroom component selection will not help you. You'll need to use a scope, drive the amp hard with a sine wave input and loo for distortion. Once you locate it you can work on adjusting the gain stages to get more clean.

I think those can things are isolation transformers for the effects loop.

Sorry to say, but it looks like someone dropped a pan full of spaghetti in the amp.

It could be an interesting project just to see how much you can clean it up.

I'd be oh-so tempted to clean it up with a screwdriver and a pair of diagonal cutters. 'Cuz it would take me under ten minutes to gut that thing out to use as a platform for a real ( ) overdrive circuit.

Fender should leave building the boutique amps to us!

Thanks much again

Unfortunately, the shots were deleted from my friends camera upn uploading, so I will try to download them to photshop and resize

I am not necessarily bent on trying to Dumbleize it at this point, but am content with just making it better

If you re-size them you will lose the resolution and nothing gained.
You need to take the pictures again with the camera set to a higher resolution and post a new set. Somewhat less of a vertical shot of the 2 "cans" may help to tell what they are.

It looks like the yellow wire comes of the treble pot directly to one of those cans on input side which then must be T5 of the channel A send, so are these cans T3,T4, T5, & T6? As far as lots of wires going every where this amp is no way near as bad as the Philco radio I am currently working on, it has layers of circuits so how am I to get to the bottom layer?
Glad I never worked for Philco I would either be a genius or brain dead with all that is going on.

How long do those relays last in an amp? The design reminds me of a Mark I or II Boogie amp with all those relays in the boost section. Yes I realize I asked more questions and gave nothing to help out.

This amp does not as bad as expected but those bundled wires ape probably a no-no depending what's wired together.

I suggest that you read this article written by Gil Ayan on leaddress:

http://ayanmusic.com/leaddress.htm

This way you can get an idea as to why your amp sounds suboptimal in OD mode. Fixing this will require some insight.

I hope this helps,

Jelle
