Is my PT dead? How do I verify?

Post by JoeV »

Hi guys,

I've got an Ampeg B15 N Portaflex on the bench with what I suspect is a dead PT.

When I disconnect all secondaries and only have HOT>switch>fuse>PT>NEUTRAL connected, the fuse blows.

With no load on the secondary, this seems to show that the PT is blown. BUT, I get no connection between the primary leads and the chassis.

What do you think? I don't wanna spend $225 on a new PT if it could be something else causing this....

Thanks!

hello, yep it's probably smoke---sounds like the primary is shorted. unless you just want a cosmetic repro you shouldn't have to spend near that much for a power trannie to get it working. rh
