Hello,
I'm looking for a single speaker for a 50W Marshall clone (an open back combo based on a 1987 head model). I woud need a single 12 inches.
I've tried some speakers and the one I prefer is a G12H-30W from 1970 (it's not a surprise of course). But I don't think it can handle all the power.
I would prefer to mount a stronger one. I have a Celestion Gold which is a good speaker, but after a year of playing, it's still a bit trebly for me (and I think I become tired of alnico speakers).
So I'm looking for a classic british tone. I never tried the Eminence, Tone Tubby, Scumback or Weber lines. There are so many models, what would be your favorites ?
Thanks for your advice !
Cyril.

speakers for a Marshall
Before commiting yourself to a particular speaker you need to ask yourself two questions.
Why are Marshall 50 watt valve heads usually sold with a quad box and 100 watt ones with two quad boxes.
What sort of speakers do Marshall put in those quad boxes.
If you are playing a relatively clean amp eg Fender then to ensure longevity of speakers those speakers should have a cobined power capability of twice the power output of the amp.
If however you a playing a high gain amp like a Marshall then they are generally played at relatively high distortion levels. They signal at the speakers is approaching a square wave shape. This wave shape is extreamly hard on speakers. Therefore to ensure long life for the speakers they need a combined power capability of five to six times the amp output power. So Marshall stick 75 - 80 watt speakers in their quad boxes for 300 watt capability.
So if you must have a single speaker then you need to be considering high power units. Look at Eminence Delta Pro 12A :- 400 watts rms or perhaps one of the Fane speakers. You may have to seach around for Fane. The Delta Pro is available from www.usspeaker.com

a 100w is more than sufficient. a 65w is risky. the scumback have that classical celestion sound more than the eminence stuff IMO

Re: 50-75W greenback-like speaker ?
There is a bar in town here that I used to play the jam at every Sunday. Was fun for a while and I even found out that one of the house amps I was playing on was a homebrew Metro kit. Sounded pretty darn good through the guys 2x12 setup too. But it gets old when the amp owner lectures you every time because he's pushing a 100W amp into two 35W greenbacks and he's afraid to turn the amp up. He even told me that I couldn't use the neck pickup on my 52 Tele RI because it was "too loud" and would blow his speakers. Ain't that some dumb shit?

From a technical point of view, I would have been very tempted to conduct an experiment to find out at what point on the volume knob the speakers would have blown.
