World Voltage

Hello friends,

If I was building an amp that was to be used around the world what voltage PT primaries would I need? Suppose it was to be used in: US, UK, Europe, Japan, Indonesia, Australia, India, Africa, Israel, etc.

A PT that has 110, 120, 220, 240 primaries. Given you'll be using it in 50Hz mains countries as well, you'll also want something that has a generous amount of iron in the core (otherwise it won't last as long in those countries).

You forgot 100V (Japan) and 230V (EU).
Mains frequency worldwide can vary 47-63Hz, design for 47Hz
2 primary winding with taps:
0-100-110-120V
0-100-110-120-130V
Connecting different sections ni series alt parallel covers almost any voltage from 100V to 250V
The norm to comply with is IEC/EN 61558-2-4 (& ROHS for EU)

230 is important since it is becoming the standard in EU 220 is legacy but still needed, 240,100 and 115, Almost no US states really have 110 more like 120. YOu can look up the world wide charts but it is funny how many people swear they are getting getting different readings from their actual sockets

Hi John,
230V is de facto EU standard since long ago, +/-10% allowed variation.
240V will become standard across EU in 2013 IIRC. We already see over 235-237V at the wall a lot more often than below.

I still see people measuring 220 as well
I have a tap that works perfect at 235 so I guess I'm in the ball park

We're still sitting on the fence regarding allowed deviation from 240V. +-10% or +5/-10%. +10% might make a lot of equipment obsolete.
Time to make sure our amps don't leak blue smoke at 264V in the wall socket. IMO +5/-10% makes more sense as it will bring 230 and 240 within same tolerance bracket requiring only raising the lower limit on 230V lines from 207 to 216V. Of course now it's the french who are opposing the whole thing of adopting UK norm (which they originally pushed for) because UK wants a new referendum to decide whether to stay in or leave EU altogether.
BTW some don't call EU European Union anymore but Eurosoviet.

I have wondered before why different countries have different standards for power distribution.

America was 110v 60Hz for years and years then it crept up to 117vac.

It's been 120vac (or higher) for a lot of years now.

I think I have read before that with a higher voltage there is less lost energy when transmitted over distances.

Isn't Japan 100v @ 50Hz?

I remember working in Brazil a few years ago, I had to drag around this huge transformer converter to use my power saw and other USA tools that ran on 120vac.

Why wasn't there ever a consortium to standardize transmitted AC?

Despite Europe deciding to harmonise on 230V, certain countries (like the UK) didn't actually change their wall voltage at all since 240V at the regulation limits already specified fell within the new 230V range.

Certain countries stayed on 220V too. For the most part it hasn't made any difference since nearly all consumer electronics goods step the voltage down and regulate it for anything critical, but it has actually made it more of a minefield for applications such as ours where the voltage is stepped up!

So, in 230V harmonised Europe you actually get 220V, 230V or 240V nominal depending on where you happen to be. Only it'll be labelled 230V. And this is progress!

Same in Australia, where all our standards changed over to 230V but if anything the supply companies have raised the voltage to offset the extra losses from more and more load on an ageing network. For an ex-240V, now 230V country, I regularly measure at or sometime above the allowed 253V maximum at my home and my amps can be running their heaters outside the 10% generally acceptable limit, not to mention a higher B+.

The European Standard does not require as large a wire (less copper) as the US standard one does for mains wire to homes.

US would use lower ohm speaker impedances than UK cabs; the UK cabs can conserve on costs with smaller wire.

World wide standards? Television (NTSE, PAL, Secam), Railroad Gauges (all over the map), which side of the road to drive on, etc can nations agree on anything?

If you think your amps are going to Africa, recommend a line conditioner or build in over voltage detection/protection. 240V AC can get as high as 327 V AC.

Ireland G (obsolete or specialist installations may be D and M (as in the UK) or F) 230 V (formerly 220 V) 50 Hz G Sockets and plugs standard as defined by NSAI I.S. 401 (Plug) I.S. 411 (Socket outlet). Type F ("Side Earth") plugs occasionally seen in old installations probably because much of the early Irish electrical network was heavily influenced by Siemens. ' A 'shaver' socket (similar to Type C) is sometimes found in bathrooms that will provide low current to some other plug types. These almost always have a 110 V socket and a 230 V socket in the same unit, or a switch to select voltage, which are sometimes labelled as 115 V and 230 V. The G type socket often has a on-off switch on the socket. 110 V centre point earthed transformers are often used for industrial portable tools. Type M plugs are permitted for applications where the power draw does not exceed 5 Amps; this power limitation allows type M sockets to be powered from domestic 10 Amp circuits and to be controlled by domestic lighting switches.

Israel C, H, M 230 V 50 Hz The standard for H plugs and sockets was recently modified to use round pins, so most modern sockets accept both type C and type H plugs. Type M sockets are used for air conditioners. Identical plugs and sockets also used in the Palestinian National Authority areas.
Italy C, F, L 230 V (formerly 220 V)[9] 50 Hz The common socket has 8-shaped holes to accept both 16A and 10A version of L plug, but in hotels are still common 10A sockets, schuko socket are very unusual. C sockets are not used in modern installations.

Malaysia C, G (but M for air conditioners and clothes dryers) 240 V (although officially ratified as 230 V) 50 Hz The official mains power voltage is AC 230 V with the tolerance of +10%,-6%.[11] However, the supplied voltage remains at 240 V, as the supplied voltage is within the allowed tolerance. Areas that rely on private power companies, like some parts of Penang and Kedah, receive a true 230 V supply. Remote villages which rely on off-grid localized diesel generators (i.e. small villages and/or isolated holiday resorts on islands too far away from the mainland to have viable underwater cabling) may receive unstable power with higher voltages, with some areas recorded to be as high as 260 V. Type C plugs are very common with audio/video equipment. Plugged into Type G outlets using widely available adapters or forced in by pushing down the shutter. The latter is widely practised, although hazardous. Since the late 90s, dedicated Type C sockets can also be found on some power strips sold in the country for convenience given the wide proliferation of devices with Type C plugs. Type C sockets can also be found on dedicated shaver sockets in bathrooms of many hotels. Type M sockets are normally used for air conditioning (especially if the air conditioner requires a magnetic starter), heavy industrial equipment, spotlights, and less commonly, washers and clothes driers. This is because most modern washers sold in the country are also fitted with Type G plugs and are two-in-one compact units which uses the same tub for washing and drying.

Some residents install their own step-down transformers and dedicated circuits, so that they can use 110 V appliances imported from Japan or North America. Most hotels only have 220 V outlets, but some hotels offer both 110 V (Type A or B) and 220 V (Type C or F) outlets. Switches and outlets fit American-sized boxes.
