VOXAC15 HW BRUNO STAND ALONE REVERB

Post by tag101 »

I was in a GC recently, and by chance, happened to plug into a new VOX AC 15 HW amp. a few notes, and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Holy smokes what tone!!! I have played many Vox amps in my life, and they had a few vintage ones there as well, but this thing really stood out to me. Slightly tighter and more focused than the vintage amps (But in a good way for my style, not so ratty sounding), and with pick sensitivity that has to be felt to be believed. Better than any amp I have ever played, including all the Dumbles and Trainwrecks. The defeatable MV is fantastic. You can add JUST the amount of gain you want, and by picking lightly, it stays smooth and as clean as glass, (REAL good cleans, not that Marshally nonsense clean) but dig in, and you get that chimey breakup and "blizzard of nails" tone to any degree you want. totally addicting. You dont want to stop playing! With the MV up, and the gain down, I could also get stunning archtop tones, without the feedback from such a harmonically thick circuit. I could not leave without it!! I cant say enough about this amp! I put my stand alone bruno reverb in front (You know, the guy whos amps are so sloppy he should not be a builder? :P ) and its pure bliss. The fender stand alone from what i have heard from tony, is just a vintage Fender reverb clone. However, like other bruno products i have tried, put next to a buddies prized vintage fender reverb, its lights out. The brunos reverb wraps around the note, and there is no delay before you hear the reverb. SO fin on the fingers and ears! So here are a few clips and pics. One set with the VOX clean, and the reverb added at the board, and the quick intro lick to "paperback writer" by the Beatles with the Bruno in front. It was done in the boost channel with the gain at about 25% in cool (normal) mode and a bit above talking level. One thing, when you defeat the MV, the amp is about 10% louder for some reason. No change in tone however, or very minimal. GREAT amp for just over 1K with an alnico blue.

Glad you like the amp Tag.

Vox has always held a niche for that type of tone.

I use a 60's Vox 2x12 extension cab for my Dumble clones with two EVM 12L's.

Don't let that smoke out!

Agree. I have played and owned all kinds of vox clones and "type" amps, but like Dumbles, it seems really hard to nail the exact Vox sound. Luckily they are not 50K!

I bet that cab sounds killer, but you must be an awfully strong guy to carry that thing around. :)

That was the one thing that made me think twice. :P In the clips, there are no drive boxes or anything. Just a TRX roomate verb in the clean clip, and the bruno stand alone reverb in the Beatles lick.

That is a very fat sound. The tube reverb kills.

That is a very clean build. Got to be high-end Chinese, right? If you hire the right guys over there now, you can get remarkable stuff.

So are those Mallory 150's?

And mostly carbon comp?

Indeed, a very clean build.
