Matchless Hotbox Full Amplifier?

Post by psychepool »

I used the original model and also tried the clones.
The distinctive glassy clean tones were very impressive, and gain tone was not my favorite, but the great sound that I've heard from many famous albums came right out of the speakers.

It is also impressive that it has 2 wonderful footswitchable channels using only two tubes.

Personally, I wonder why the preamplifier which gives a great sound in this efficient configuration is not made as a full amplifier with a power amplifier.
I have never seen it even made in DIY. Is there any special reason?
I think it would be a good amp with a Vox / Matchless type power amp.
I do not think I'm not the only one that think about this idea.

Has anyone ever made a full amplifier with a power amp?
Are there any special reasons for not trying to make a full-amp?

The German webshop "Tubetown.de" designed a mini-amp with ecc-99 output stage based on the hot box.

Apparently the hotbox-preamp as is didn't work well with an output stage directly connected to it, so they made some modifications.

That seems different with Hotbox.
Why Hotbox preamp didn't worked well with output stage?
I connected it several amp's return and did not have any problems.

The distortion channel should work fine with any power amp. But the clean channel only has one triode gain stage and that's just not enough to drive a power amp.

It seems reasonable. When I plug it into return, only used active type.
But I saw many vintage typped amps has just one triode. (ex 18w lite, 5e3, etc.)
Does it really matter it has just one triode on clean channel?
