Good Quality 1 Watt Carbon Composition Resistors?

Post by BonesMachine »

I might need to replace some 1 watt CC resistors in my 70's Fender Bassman 100 head and would really like to stick with CC. Seems like all i can find in 1 watt is cheap no name made in china, NOS and NTE. i get the feeling NTE is cheap no name packaged as NTE? i noticed a disclaimer on their site saying this could be the case. i would like to stay away from NOS and get some good quality new 1 watt CC. any sources these days?

i'm looking at Ohmite but they only have 1/2 watt CC which are available but i think arent made anymore. i guess i could use a couple 1/2 watt double in value in parallel instead of a 1 watt. i might need to replace resistors around tube screen grids and filter caps. so wondering if there could be any any tech spec issues since these are high voltage areas of the amp? Thanks

again i would really like to stick with CC. maybe CC in parallel would yield more mojo?

are these power supply dropping resistors? stick with metal oxide. go for function over vintage look. 3w rating is also probably a prudent idea

I understand you want the vintage look. The 470 ohm Allen Bradley 1watt are probably all at my house. Not for sale.
Get the green Vishay wirewound for screen resistors and metal oxide for power supply dropping resistors.

If you really have to have CC, try giving EuroTubes a call. I gave them six 24x18x18 boxes of NOS resistors last year. There were many thousands of Allen Bradleys and other CC resistors in there and I'd be surprised if they don't have what you need.

i believe a couple are power supply dropping resistors. they are 1 watt 220k and connected to both +/- ends of filter caps

i see no problem with getting things back to stock using good quality new components even if there are better options available. i guess at this point though i would like to experiment with different resistors in the amp including newer types and also CC in parallel and i am not an electrical engineer. putting aside what leo fender would want to use given the options available today and taking the question of parallel resistors out of context. from a purely electrical perspective would two 1/2 watt CC in parallel be considered a kosher 1 watt CC replacement as far as the high voltages and resistor specs?

I'm definitely going to order some 1/2 watt CC as spare parts for the rest of the amp. Looks like Ohmite has 1/2 watt available but not made anymore. So is Ohmite the best brand I can get for brand new CC? I think they're made in Mexico? Are they considered a good brand these days? I'm not too familiar with different brands and what's best. Thanks

They are simply voltage equalizers (and bleeders when the power is off), and have no effect at all on tone or response. Any one watt resistor will do, and flameproof is always a good idea for any power supply resistors.

1 watt Allen Bradley CC 220K resistors are listed on ebay right now. The listing price is $1.99 each.

Since ABs are what was most commonly used by Fender back in the day, it stands to reason that ABs will work well.
