12L6GT anyone?

Post by TUBEDUDE »

Was looking at some 12L6GT's in my stash and wondering if anyone has used them in a build. The spec sheet shows a power tube that operates with a low B+ (200V max) and a Pa of 10W.
Looks good for a low power SE, or a PP AB1. With such a low plate voltage, a couple small toroids could make a compact amp. Any solder slingers here have experience with this tube?

Who makes a off the shelf toroid for low wattage SE?

At only 10 watts, if building an amp for it, you might be better off making it a distortion unit, for the tone, like the old Herzog.
I was thinking of a lowish power push pull, not a single ended herzog/champ circuit.
A small amp for one of my grandkids. I'm building a 7189 amp for my oldest grand now, and realized it was too powerful to maintain domestic harmony.
I build clean amps and use a 5879 pentode in a distortion channel in all my amps.
I've used those baby toroids in stereo preamp builds. The lowish voltage and moderate current seem ideal for this.
One for B+ and one for heaters voltage. With a Hammond 125 series output it seems a worthy goal.

Isn't it the same as the 50L6, 35L6, etc? I've used the 50L6. Sounds alright. Not production, but there are plenty to be had at a reasonable price.

Edit: Here's the link to the one I made using the 50L6GT. I know it's a different design than what you're doing, but might have some quirks you can use:

The 35L6 has a lower heater draw so when push comes to shove the other variants can make more power. The tube being uncommon depends on how you look at things. There will be no shortage of them too soon as millions of tabletop radios used the, And they sat with little airflow and filled with dust but keep on ticking. They are somewhat underrated. They can take more voltage on the plate than the datasheet indicates, the screen supply needs to follow to the datasheet as going over voltage here may ruin your day. The 12L6 is often found in a 12W6 box, the 12W6 having a 300V limit on the plate.

Yes, from memory, the 6W6 is the 6v version of that tube (not the 6L6, because that would have made sense...).
